It was always going to be a win-win for Freo. Gunston either playing half-injured or not at all. Offsets the loss of Luke on our side.

Agreed. Without Luke, Gunston was always going to be a difficult match-up for us.

For mine, the first-choice defensive match-ups are something like:

Roughhead – Dawson (at least close to goal)
Schoenmakers – Johnson (playing off him)
Breust - Ibbo
Smtih - Suban
Rioli - Spurr
Puopolo - Sutcliffe

We’ll have to reshuffle a bit when Hale plays closer to goal, and I suspect that the Hawks will want to keep Johnson occupied by parking Hale forward a fair bit. Roughy might head up the ground, and that would cause us some real problems. I can easily see the Hawks getting to the ball forward through Roughy in the centre of the ground, using Hale as a decoy, and leaving the forward 50 empty with Rioli and Puopolo.

If these match-ups play out, I’d actually be really concerned about Puopolo. He’s crafty, and strong, and given Sutcliffe is carrying a shoulder injury, he won’t be strong enough for him. You could swap Spurr and Sutcliffe, but that just shifts the problem. Maybe Suttcliffe can get up the ground on Smith, and we send Suban back closer to goal. I’m not sure.

Who’d be a coach, eh?

Pity it's not a day game. Roughead wouldn't be allowed outside in Perth today.

They are all good, that's the problem. Suban is too short for Smith. Radical I know but A Pearce would have Smith covered in run and same type skills, and could hurt them going the other way with his marking ability.

Rioli and Poppy scare me when you look at those match ups, we have no pace to handle them if they get out. Lucky we play 3 extra defenders for 90% of the game.
Nathan: When did you get balls?
Simon: I've always had balls you've just never seen them.
Nathan: That's the gayest thing I've ever heard.

Can we not play Zu on one of them? He's got a quick set of pins on him.

Or is it a case of he doesn't play that sort of role?

It's more the case that he isn't really quick anymore. When fully fit he has elite endurance, but he's never been quick over 30m, and isn't as agile as he looks.

Sutcliffe will get one of the quicker ones and Sheridan might also get a small forward too.

I'd be happy to sit Gu on Smith.

Our defenders will need to be clean on ground and then use it well as Roughy and Hale will seek to bring it to ground and watch the carnage from there.

PS do you reckon there is a Hawks fan forum thread talkingabout who gets Walters and Balla and whether Frawley and Lake can both play at Subi?
