They announced it mid week and the Kangaroos ladder position was known to anyone having a bet, giving them some idea that it might happen.

I am a punter, particularly on the footy. But, at the end of the day its a case of punter beware.

There are many lead up races in the spring carnival, whereby the horse is just having a run to get "race fitness" for a big group 1 event such as the Cox Plate, Caulfied Cup, Melbourne Cup etc. There trainers do not come out and tell us that there horse isn't going to win because its not in peak condition for that race - its up to the punter to judge that. Of course, the horse may win, even if those in know don't think it will.

None of this resting players stuff should be questioned for the sake of the punters. Stuff them.

As far as the resting of players, I say, if you have a list of 44 to choose from, then any team can choose any of those 44 at any time. What is important is that the 22 playing the game are trying to win the game as best they can.

Your fantasy or DFFL team may suffer, but again tough titties.

I might throw a twenty at Freo by 1-39 points.

Punting this weekend won't focus on who wins or loses but on the 1st goalkicker or most disposals.

Now that's gonna be fun!

I'm also waiting for the market on the 1st Richmond player to be knocked out and by whom.

I reckon in situations like this where there is a lack of incentive to play to a team's full ability, the number one ticket holders should have to fight for the points. Which in the case of Richmond and North would be Ricky Ponting vs Evelyn Danos and Ken Grenda apparently. Maybe they could tag team? Or even fight in tandem. Either way my money's on Punter.

Because what's the point of retaining a seven foot VC winning commando if you can't bring him out once and a while to remind everyone who's boss?

DockerKnockers
So after last weeks round, it appeared that Fremantle would likely desire to rest players in Round 23 vs Port Adelaide. The topic of the "integrity rule" was raised and widely discussed. 70+% of news polls agreed that Fremantle should be able to rest players.

Articles were written and posted as AFL news with headings such as;
- "Lyon's plea to rest 'fatigued' Dockers"
- "Dockers sweat on AFL's 'integrity' rule"
- "'I'll wear criticism': Lyon ready for backlash"

Fremantle informed the AFL and the AFL endorsed Fremantle's request to rest up to 11 players, in accordance with the current law, amended rule, No. 29, 'To Perform on One's Merits', which reads: "(It) means at all times to perform honestly and to the best of one's ability in the pursuit only of legitimate competitive objectives.
"For the avoidance of doubt "legitimate competitive objective" includes the development of the team or players or management of player fatigue or injuries but does not include improving a club’s draft position, improving a club's position with respect to a potential player exchange or manipulating a club's position on the ladder for the purpose of improving its draw within the finals series."

Now we have North Melbourne also wishing to rest players.
AFL headlines for North Melbourne;
- "Will the Roos rest players?"
- "Roos may rest 10 players against Tigers"
- "Rest will have Roos primed for finals: Scott"

Now please correct me if I'm wrong, but if Norths now lose to Richmond (now most likely with resting of players), there is now a strong chance that the bottom 4 of the 8 will remain in their current positions. This then leaves the possibility that the Western Bulldogs will now be able to host an Elimination Final (5th vs 6th) against Adelaide at Docklands. Their desired finals home ground. This topic was recently discussed and the AFL responded that unless the Bulldogs were playing an interstate team, it was unlikely that the game would be played at Docklands (a ground where the Bulldogs have won their last 9 matches).

If Norths were denied the resting of players and beat Richmond, then it was likely that Adelaide would have been hosting an Elimination Final vs Richmond* and the Bulldogs would be playing Norths* at the MCG. In other words, Norths resting players clearly has some evidence of tanking and improving its draw within the finals series.
(*Edit: credit to Duges66, I wrongly, initially, had Adelaide vs Norths, and Bulldogs vs Richmond)

By permitting Norths to rest players, the AFL will now likely have an Elimination Final at the MCG and Docklands instead of the MCG and Adelaide Oval.
Gone to bigfooty where there's fewer Docker Haters.

If you didn't allow North Melbourne to rest players, they still wouldn't have won the game. They would have played at half pace and lost.

The home and away season determines ladder position if through your season performance you can improve your ladder position for finals so be it. The AFL can't determine how a te plays or who they play.

Yeah well, they could just skirt this whole "integrity" thing and schedule Freo to play a final at Geelong again.

DK - I'm with you.
Having said that your second last paragraph only comes about i.e. Crows v Roos @ AO & Dogs v Tiges @ MCG if Lions defeat Dogs (possible but unlikely)
The most likely outcome and it's important to note because it would have been the #1 consideration of the A(V)FL when they rubber stamped it, is that had Nth won & Adelaide win & Dogs win, as expected, then it would have been, Crows v Tiges @ AO & Dogs V Nths @ MCG.
They would not of wanted the second most likely Victorian team with a membership of >70000 to be playing in SA.
They also wanted to reduce the possibility that the tiges huge number of potential bums on seats (= $$$'s) out in the 1st round of the finals.
That outcome is the worst case for the A(V)FL, given the lower member #'s of both the Dogs & Roo's compared to the higher number of Tiger members.
They also covet 2 games in Victoria, to increase the chances that 2 Vic teams advance, again with an eye to the bottom line.
They also would be very pleased that the Crows supporters will now be spending their $'s in Victoria.

It looks likely they will get what they have set out to achieve, i.e. maximizing their bottom line.

While it might be clear to a blind wombat that his marsupial cousins are playing ladder positions it is impossible to prove beyond reasonable doubt.

most of the comment about the Roos resting players seems to suggest that a full strength Roos would probably beat the Tigers.

I'm no fan of Richmond but that's just garbage. Tigers would have won anyway and the Roos knew it.
