Just curious about this free, I just don't see it. Can anyone enlighten me as to what is the infringement here.

Disregard the high contact to 211 in the preceding center bounce it's not for that obviously.

Apparently either 211 or Mundy has thrown the ball according to the audio. I just don't see it but it must be there somewhere coz ump Brown is in perfect position to make the call.

Perfect example of the differing rule interpretations once Freo are playing. Sandi and Mundy both clearly handpass correctly, and the umpire is in perfect position to see both handpasses. If this is not blatant bias then it is total incompetence and in either case the umpire must be sanctioned, and an apology issued to Freo. It was good enough to apologise to the Saints the other week for an umpiring mistake, it should be good enough for us.

Umpire thinks it might have been a throw, so pays it. Not the way to pay frees but they do it all the time.

It would have been good if they'd paid the more likely throw from Dawson that gifted Melbourne a goal 1 minute later.

Sandi tapped it down, our player (on the ground) tossed it back up to him, Sandi handballs to Mundy and the whistle goes. Just a late whistle - the player on the ground (can't work out who) threw it up to Sandi. Correct call, not a great camera angle.

OK, that one aside - keep watching for the REAL OUTRAGE of the day. Jack Whats didn't kick the next goal - IT WAS A BEHIND, MISSED BY AT LEAST A METRE! Just because it was so high the goal ump missed it. I didn't, I was sitting there in the city end in perfect position - it went way up on the wrong side of the goal stick - should've been a review!

Sandi taps ball down, Suban fumbles and overruns the ball without taking possession, Melbourne #7 pushes Suban off the ball, fumbles himself, Sandi picks the ball cleanly up from the ground and cleanly handballs to Mundy, who cleanly handballs to Freo player running into our forward line. Umpire blows his whistle, calls a throw and awards Melbourne the free kick. No Freo player threw the ball in that passage of play.

Hawks & Port in particular are masters of the flick/throw/borderline handball* and are rarely pinged.
211 or Mundy are pinged for clearly correctly handballing, fair dinkum what hope are we?

If it hadn't been for the Melb' runner gifting us a free in the 3rd qtr it'd would have been 1 free for each of the last 3 qtrs.
As usual it's the ones they don't pay us.
Better to point this out after a convincing win lest it be seen as being from a sore loser.

* where the hand holding the ball is moving at the same speed as the hand that hits the ball

Freo had 12 Frees For to 2 Against at one point in the first quarter and 4 or 5 of those For Freo were 50/50 so we got it very good for that period. (One of the 2 for Melbourne was very dodgy.)
But then the umps did what they often do after a break and came out after quarter time, put the whistle away for Freo, but found plenty of hard to see reasons to give a Free to Melbourne, 14 to 4 (Melbourne's favour) for the last 3 quarters.

By the end of the game, Melbourne got far more dodgy frees, but hey, as posted by somebody else, I'd rather get the good end of the umpiring in that first quarter if I had to choose.
Gone to bigfooty where there's fewer Docker Haters.

As I posted elsewhere, the free kick count, and the style of play, and scoring of goals by Freo have a very high correlation. The putting the cue in the rack after quarter time is not ALL Roly's doing, Margetts & co have a hand in it as well.

My gut feel is Roosy did his team no favour by declaring he wanted them to play angry.
Umps took control by gifting us a few early to ensure they controlled it.
After qtr time is was situation normal.
