TOPIC: Freo chant

Once again it's you rich folk with your speakers and your seats and your seats that allow knees to bend in the right places that have to alert us 3 tier standers to these abominations. I actually only heard the chant start up once and looked alarmingly at my son sitting next to me questioning how the f#3k the crowd down by the dugout had got their carp together to all start the chant at the same time - it was disconcerting and concerning at the same time. No noise came from the rusty HMV speaker above our heads (but that's not surprising - no noise has come from it since the 1972 GF).

The Freo chant is not something to be messed with! This is OUR chant, our chance to pen a team song we can be proud of and it must always be started by one rotund hirsute fella in Row G Block 321 or a little old purple beanied lady behind the goals or any other loyal and devout fan who realises the lads are rising to the occassion or who realises the opposition needs to know much pain and gnashing of teeth is coming their way. And it must rise parabolically with consistency and intensity until the ears of opposition supporters bleed. And then it must die as quickly as it came - an enigma carried away on the wind but striking fear into the hearts of any unpurple clad player.

Marketing people - rack off! We don't need you and we don't want canned chants. Next thing you'll be naming a chardonnay after us!

(And while we're at it with marketing - don't even get me started on you block 102's who must now have one of every prize that has ever been handed out at Dockers game - tell me the last time the camera panned to the ugly fat guy in block 317 and cannoned a free ipad my way??)

Be happy it was not Taylor Swift's Love Story or Kenny G.

These choices are made by some squish head in a booth and are taking the piss.

The worst thing about this is that they have obviously recorded our chant and are using it for evil, just like reverse kryptonite in superman 2. Bloody Steves

This a a bulk "you beaut" of every post.

I go to the footy to watch the footy and talk about the footy to my mates. Please don't ruin that experience. Rolling big red balls, watching someone race against a digital figure, some plonker speaking dribble at the breaks, artificial chants, random music and bulk advertising at every opportunity is ruining the footy experience. The only things I don't mind are the fireworks at NIGHT games and the count down to the bounce down but forget the rest.

My email this morning to administration and member services:
To whom it may concerned,
The idea to record the supporters' own Freo chant and play it through the speakers after each goal was a very poor one. It cheapened the experience and removed the spontaneity from the experience. As a result, the chant didn't really gain any traction during the game.
Please leave it alone and have a good talking to to the arseclown who came up with the idea.

I think the club has an obligation to examine ways to make the match day experience better - they just messed it up on this occasion.

For what it's worth, I took a bit more of a diplomatic tone.

Hi there

It seems like a lot of effort has gone into improving the match day experience. I think this is an admirable aim, and I applaud the club for looking at ways to engage and energise fans who attend in person.

That said, I think the post-goal attempts to provoke fans to cheer after goals are a significant misstep, culminating in the piped ‘Freo’ chat after each goal on Sunday. It is a chant that has grown organically over the years (albeit it’s possible we stole it from Sydney), and people already consider it a rich part of the Freo fan experience. It’s even something non-Freo fans recognise. There is something amazing about a Freo crowd of tens of thousands collectively deciding when to engage in it.

Making that an automatic process at the end of each goal really diminishes it and, at least in my humble opinion, cheapens it somewhat.

I don’t think the club should be scared to try new things. However, I hope the club is willing to reflect on the views of the fans should, in their opinion, those attempts adversely affect the match day experience.

Thanks, and congratulations on a wonderful season to date. Fingers crossed for the coming weeks.

Kind regards
Morgan

PS: For what it’s worth, I also think that having the song lyrics on the scoreboard is a bit embarrassing, and Hell’s Bells (ACDC) would be a much better pre-match song – it has a wonderfully atmospheric build-up, and would allow for TNT to be a celebration song.

They're going to Photoshop out Mule (and countless others) - they'll probably send Morgan a blowup anchor and a 'thanks, but get-knotted' txt.

My email

DONT HAVE SOMEONE ON THE PA ORCHERSTRATING FREO CHANTS!!!! Whoever came up with that idea should be sacked. Don't put the words on the screen for the club song as well. The marketing team should try and get in touch which the "common" freo fan and not try morphe people into fans that they want them to be. Read the "freo chant" post on dockerland to get an idea of how people are feeling. Less is more.

Regards,
Thornton

Good call on "Hells Bells", Morgan.

(The rest of what you wrote was pretty much on the money, too.)

My sent message

Dear my club

I don't wish to bother you with details, simply an observation, a description of a problem and a solution.

At recent Fremantle games, post-goal music and sound effect bytes have been broadcast over the loud speaker system at Subiaco oval.

This has been a poor decision and poorly executed.

Please stop and never do it again.
