TOPIC: Recruiting zones in the AFL

I'd like to see how the AFL thinks it is going to implement this idea. On the up side clubs will have to invest in their allocate zones and junior development but who decides which area belongs to which team?

The AFL is a bit like the Wheel of Fortune showcase. They have a pile of money to spend and they just look through a bunch of random stuff picking out what they would like to spend it on.

The basic system should be that you take some money. You spend it on developing kids all over the country to be able to play football. You let the worst clubs pick the best kids every year.

Work to make that system as effective as possible, perhaps by funding every state the same and changing the bloke in charge of it all more than once every thirty years, but don't corrupt it.

Implement and the weaker clubs will complain they don't have enough to spend in their zones. So it's creating more inequity problems.

Yep, as much as a recruitment zone arrangement has some romantic appeal, the more complicated the system the greater the opportunity for those more powerful to take advantage of it. Look at our current tax system.

There needs to be a stronger connection between the clubs and their communities, and this would be a good way to do it. But, as others have mentioned, the practicalities of it become difficult, it would lead to squabbling, and certain clubs would rort the system.

Mind you Morgan think of all the good Bond could do with exclusive access to say Papua New Guinea.

Personally, I think its a great idea.

Proactive clubs will spend time and money developing footy in their zones and Eddie will have something new to complain about. Win-Win.

Aside from the corruption to the recruitment model, AFL football clubs are poorly run, have little oversight and jump from one fad to the next. They're not fit to look after children.

Can you imagine if Essendon had had access to 14 year olds.

They could put them on their Cookie List.

And Hypen - don't be dissing PNG. Look what James Gwilt has brought to AFL.

Oh ...

If he couldn't get anyone to move from PNG then you know it's not ineptitude.. That would take skill.
