TOPIC: Poor Recruiting Comes Back To Bite Us

I'll take you back to the original point in this topic.

It is a sad indication of our recruiting when we desperately rely on a couple of guys in their early to mid 30s to be the best we have in the forward line and back line.

I'm sure a few people will be interested in this article just posted on SEN.

When you look back at the Mccarthy/Apeness draft, Mccarthy was well in Freo's sights according to all the paper articles, yet GWS sprung the surprise and picked him ahead of us. Again they were drafting basically for future currency..

Hawthorn and Sydney are generally acknowledged as implementing a pretty good strategy when it comes to list management.
Keep a core group of guns, supplement them with youngsters from the draft but top up with experience by trading either picks or players surplus to requirements.
You could argue that Freo have tried to do the same - with much less success it seems.
Of course you want your older players to be contributing at a high level - otherwise why have them there.
They have tried to top up but Anthony, Gumbleton etc have not worked out. They have had a crack at the likes of Cloke and anybody else over 5ft but haven't managed to get one over here.

I don't think it's our drafting that is the singular problem here. It's a lottery and we've been down the pecking order the last few years. I'm more concerned about our inability to pick up players from other clubs (a la Hawthorn). Freo is clearly not a desirable club for the majority of players.

The Deaf Cheats don’t even like to drive to Seaford for training (30 odd km from Melbourne CBD) ... why would any East Coasters want to add all that dang flying across the country every other week?

"How do you tell the difference between someone who is really good at doing an impossible job and someone who is incompetent at doing an impossible job?"

I can't. That's why we have Chris Bond....It explains everything.

Morgan thanks for your continuing ability to put things in perspective.

I find it unbelieveable that the majority of posters on here don't appreciate the fact that we are a regular top four side now and top of the ladder for most of the season

Ok , query the game plan , can the recruiting staff , but in my opinion they are doing a great job. We are at a decided disadvantage being in the West when it comes to recruiting established players-buggered if I'd want to fly to the other side of the country every fortnight when I had the option of staying in Melbourne

Lets not be too hard on the team who got us into this position.. I for one have enjoyed being on top for most of the season

You can't be on top if you've been pansted at the last Derby.

In all honesty I think Apeness is going to be a real force up front

Could depend on how he comes back from his injury

Aaargh!!! Bloody hell. Talk about getting off track.

This whole thread is about our lack of KPP's to replace 33yr old players who are more than likely going to retire at the end of the year. And even if they don't, then who is going to take their place?
It's got nothing to do with where we are on the ladder now. The whole idea of a good squad is that it needs to be balanced and ours is not.
We have an abundance of midfielders. Some that are trying to be made into something they were not drafted as(Sheridan-half back), some that continue to play well in WAFL but can't get a game at the top level(Weller, Blakely, Langdon), some that are consistently in the best for Peel but can't get off the rookie list(Ballard).

So what have we got to take over from Pav and AA Luke?
Pearce-19 yrs old and still finding his way. In fact we recruited him as a young backman but because we've got no big forwards we're trying to throw him up there.
Apeness-20 yrs old and unproven. Potential but unproven and out all year injured
Tabener- 20 yrs and also still finding his way. Not kicking goals at WAFL level.
Smith-20 or 21 yrs old. Off rookie list and hasn't looked like getting a an AFL game.
Moller 20 yrs old. Recruited as a ruckman and trying to be made into a forward with little success. Highly likely to be delisted.
Vandeleur-20 yrs old. Plays in the back line with little influence. Highly likely to be delisted
Hurley-!9-20 yrs old? Irishman in first year of playing AFL. Definitely a long term prospect.

That's it. So please don't tell me we have prepared well for the future. As for the "well there was no-one else worth getting in those drafts" believers here's some for you that were taken after our first choice, and they don't include any in the years we took Hill, Morabito and Michael Apeness as our first choice.

Hurn Henderson Ward Hooker Trengove Litherland Grundy Frost
Birchall McEvoy Westhoff Talia McKernan Jaensch Paparone Bruce
Patfull Tarrant Reid Vickery Broadbent McGovern Shaw Hobsch
Garland Taylor Thompson Schoenmakers Darling McInness Membrey Lever
Goldsack Rance Wood Lynch Howe Blicavs Oxley Goddard

Yeah, sure there might be some there you think aren't that good or aren't getting regular games due to being in a side with strong KPP's and there's probably more missing, but the point is a 13-14 yr age gap between our outgoing best backman and forward and new blood with virtually nothing in between(Silvagni, Dawson)is poor planning.
Like having an apprentice and a retiree in your workplace with virtually nothing in between.

So if you disagree who do you see replacing our two greats, who are both now very suspect injury wise, and also taking into consideration that we apparently can't convince anyone to come here.?

Ok, for all the tall-freaks - here's a smokey for you: 201cm, 100kgs can mark, kick a good straight set shot and is able to muscle to win a contest. Not fast, but certainly not slow - flexible with great determination, reads the play and has a great understanding of evolving geometry. Funny thing is, he has played for 9 AwFL seasons and is still under 30 years of age. Added bonus: grew up adoring Fremantle and would be living his dream playing for the Dockers.

The real funny thing is (and this is hilarious) we already have him on the list - wears #12.

Spot on Polly. Griff has been fantastic since he's come into the team. However, this thread is concerning because since 2008 and the compromise draft, we've played in 5 finals series, this being the fourth consecutive final. That's 5 of the last 7 years. Given that the last 4 years, both the Hawks and Sydney have snared star KPP, we're still going toe to toe with them. So I think the criticism is unwarranted. While we're still chasing for our maiden premiership, the thrill of the chase is what I'm most excited about.

The miracle to me is that all the eastern seaboard kids we have drafted (with their folks crossing fingers and toes that Freo doesn't pick them) generally all stay. We lose very few back east, unlike in Melbourne where players regularly hop between clubs like Easter bunnies or head back west. Can't be such a bad life here after all.
