I agree dockersknockers. In general our recruiting has been really good. Up there with the best. Just look at Carlton to see how it can all turn pear-shaped for years when your recruiting staff are not up to scratch (Boekhorst as your first pick? Seriously...)
Which brings me back to luring good players over here from other clubs, and why we continually fail at it despite the media saying our war chest is full. I presume we are right into Hogan but if past performance is anything to go by we probably haven't spoken to his management.

The CLUB KILLER draft and rookie draft was under Connelly's tenure between 2004 -2007. Remember Schwab also liked to have his input into drafting during this period and this is what we ended up with.
Games played by draft or rookie selections.
Copping 0 Krieger 0 Warnock 21
Stribling 0 Juniper 0 Collard 1
Haines 0 Drum 22 O'Brien 3
Schofield 12 Mourish 0 Smith 0
Foster 9 Rumble 0 Copping 0 redrafted as rookie
Hinkley 22 Johnson 14 Head 9
Connely 0 Pratt 1 Mourish 0
Dunn 3

27 players in total were drafted during this period for a total of 868 AFL games played. We know it can be a lottery but 22 of those 27 players drafted only contributed 117 games between them, 3 of which played 65 games. Of every other club only Sydney drafted as poorly during this period but won a GF. All other clubs AFL games played was above 1200.

From the 2005 draft the next 6 players after our first pick at 10 (Drum) have gone on to play 1055 games between them. They are Higgins, Nathan Jones, Shannon Hurn, Grant Birchall, Varcoe and Richard Douglas.

The 7 players drafted in 2006 played a total of 14 AFL games between them. Of these Foster played 9. The players available to Freo after their first pick at 31 (Collard) were Tippet, Goldstein, Will Schofield, Robbie Gray, Goldsack, Westhoff.

In 2007 the next 6 players available after first pick (Palmer @ 7) were Dangerfield, Brad Ebert, Lobe, Harry Taylor, Alex Rance, Scott Selwood.

As comparison the same period between 2008-2011 saw 42 players drafted to Freo for a current total of 2035 AFL games and growing which is among the best of all clubs.

I dont quite understand how you can say our recruiting has been up with the best.
Yes we have recruited good midfielders and done well with some rookie midfielders. BUT midfielders.
Honestly there are plenty of midfielders around who range from descent to exceptional, plenty. It would not be that hard for an average recruiter in being able to pick up a solid midfielder early in the draft, hardly exceptional. Even late picks can end up being solid midfielders.
The key for Freo was being able to find KPP, of which other than Alex pearce ( promising but far from proven ) there has been few if any. On that major scorecard we have failed. Difficult I agree , but that is the challenge.

Forget about drafting KPP's... This list from Corporal is remarkable:
2004 Traded picks 11, 27, 45 for Carr
2005 Drum
2006 Traded Medhurst & 8 for Tarrant. Polak for 8, 42
2007 Palmer
2008 Hill
2009 Morabito
2010 Pitt
2011 Sheridan
2012 Simpson
2013 Apeness
2014 Weller

That is 1 out of 10 strike rate of getting quality on your first pick (Hill)!

Even if you narrow the field to those that missed with unforeseeable injuries (Pitt, Mora), you are still sitting at a pretty miserable strike rate.

Are you saying that it wasn't fun to watch Josh Carr terrorise the wiggles?

This article would seem to suggest that our recruiting has not reaped good rewards. Only one player (Lachie Neal) named in the best 47 under 22 year olds in the comp. it just one media driven article but it's a stretch to suggest additions from Freo (A Pearce may get there but not ready yet)

Pretty hard for a young fella to get into the Freo side over the past few years. The experienced guys are doing OK.
Hawthorn are represented by only Bradley Hill - it's just a reflection of where each team is at.

Unless Freo is supposed to have an injury / bad luck matrix somewhere, most of those picks were good picks.

Drum had a heap of injuries, so it's a touch unfair to put the blame on the recruiters.

Palmer won the Rising Star, so hard to say that the recruiters were wrong in seeing something.

Hill was a beauty

Morabito was a beauty cruelled by injury.

Pitt was always a long-term prospect taken at #20 (effectively a second round pick), that never got a chance to show his potential. The remaining picks in that 'first round' were Lamb (?) Gutherie, Jamie Cripps and Karnezuz (?). Not exactly world beaters.

We're still to see the best of Sheridan (taken at 16), but for context, the next consecutive picks were Clay Smith, Brad McKenzie, Elliot Kavanagh, Hayden Crozier, Josh Bootsma, Murray Newman, Henry Shade, Sebastian Ross and Todd Elton. I wouldn't know have those blokes if I walked into them.

Simspon had all the talent in the world.

Apeness can't be judged for another couple of years

Weller looks good.

Tough crowd.

Corporal Agarn
If we're still to see the best of Sheridan then we've waited too long. Must be one of the slowest maturing midfielders going around.
And Simpson having all the talent in the world actually counted for nothing.
Why would you use your first round pick(Pitt)as a long term midfield prospect when there are plenty of ready to go midfielders in every draft. Especially when it wasn't midfielders we needed.

Mids are easy to get and develop quicker. Talls and FFs are proving impossible to draft well or buy. We've done well at the former and let Bond take care of the latter.

How do you tell the difference between someone who is really good at doing an impossible job and someone who is incompetent at doing an impossible job?

To establish that is as impossible as trying to draft a key position player.

That’s an interesting question Shane. I’d probably start with something you can measure. Let’s say wins.

We’ve been top 4 for a few years now, so clearly we have done / are doing some things right.

According to most on here (myself not included), our game plan sucks and is holding us back. So we can’t ascribe any credit to Roly.

According to most on here (myself not included) we are being held back by systematic bias from the umpiring fraternity and the tribunal, so we must be better than our actual record.

Yet, despite these impediments, we have won an incredible number of games over the last few years, and sit on top of the ladder.

The conclusion must be that our list is close to the best in the league, if not the best. Bond has been List Manager / GM Football Operations since 2007, so, I guess it stands to reason some credit must go to Bondy’s team.

Or, you know, we are just lucky.
