Getting to the big October dance is no certainty at the moment.
I'm not sure what RL and the boys can do to sharpen their skills to become a team ready to thump the opposition.
This has been a good year so far though we appear to be a bit off the pace of the other contenders.
How much do the boys want it and how good can they be to overcome the obstacles on the way to raising Freo's first premiership cup?

Worrying about what other teams are doing is a fast track to insecurity and lack of faith.

Don't do that. Seriously...

wind the window down, demand the elbow spot, apply some right foot on the pedal that matters. The lane is yours. Own it.

The surest recipe to regain our edge is to play a lowly side that can't string 4 quarters together so that we can get our mojo back and find where our goal scorers have gone. Oh, hangon .... Melbourne .... Perfect, just in time to sharpen back up for that Port mob as we run into the finals.
You beauty. can't wait.

We arent converting stoppages into goals in our 50 like we used to. The stats show we are one of the better teams but unless we can kick goals its pointless. Ross has our forwards running up and down the ground all day so when they take marks and have simple set shots they are that gassed it would be like kicking a medicine ball. We need to keep our full forward glued to the 50 line, if the opposition wants to make up the numbers by flooding their own forward line then good for them - it just means we will have a free man waiting to slot one from 10 metres out. Too many times are we caught short with no one to kick to so by the time someone legs it 200 metres to get a mark they are knackered. We can cover for the stupid turnovers, but without goals too many of those turnovers will result in a loss. Lets blame Sumich.

It's not panic stations, but the signs are troubling.

The one point out of this that makes sense is that our disposal has been poor - pretty much everything else is solid or better. When we were cruising we had Johnno, Duffman and Clancee as our outlet players with disposal efficiencies in the 83+% range. Our worst footy in terms of that disposal and link up has come with them out of the side.

Couldn't do anything about Johnno's injury, but I wonder how much we trade away for getting rid of a "slow" and a "soft" player (perceptions - not necessarily mine) when you see how badly we are getting killed by turnovers out of defence and through the middle of the ground. ie. in Duffield's case, I would happily concede the odd contested mark inside 50 and set shot if we got rid of 6-8 clangers which present open rebound scoring opportunities to the opposition.

For what he's worth, Dawson's disposal could be covered when he could handball off to one of 3-4 elite kicks running past him - but when they aren't there, his value in that unit drops as well.

I don't know about Duff. His confidence (what is that again?) was shot before he got dropped.

Lathlain oval is a fairly dull place and Duff didn't exactly light the place up last Saturday.

Yeah - maybe Duff's down on form - haven't had a chance to see him in the WAFL. I was surprised when he went out of the side originally though. But I'd take 15 precise possessions over some of the butchery I've seen over the past few weeks.

Problem is that I don't believe players can just decide to be better kicks - they either are good kicks, or they work at it over seasons and pre-seasons with (normally) incremental improvement. So I think that it is unrealistic to keep the same personnel and expect the disposal to suddenly improve over the last two rounds.

which is why Ross's presser worried me.

He basically said, players brought great effort but made errors that were not uncharacteristic, and those players need to work on their skills. Didn't sound like a man with a plan. A few weeks back, his plan to turn things around was "really really clear".

Maybe winning ugly has dented his confidence...

What I took away from Ross Lyon's press conference was that no one at the club gives a stuff about the home and away season any more.

with you on that Shane.

If there's one thing 2013 taught us pre-GF, it's that winning a Qualifying Final to secure a home Prelim is your best bet of getting there.

We have a QF locked in, and if we win one more game this H&A, it'll be a home QF.

I reckon Pav will get another week's rest.

wish a few more of the nervous nellies would keep their eyes on the prize
