Each week I review the Freo games and specifically watch how Freo score each goal (and how the opposition does), because I'm not that concerned what happens in between, after all, the scoreboard decides the winner. Since doing this, I have a new admiration for Pav (and even some other players I used to hate, such as D.Pearce).
Pav is often involved directly or indirectly in around half of our goals. He has been very underrated this year. His decision making and skills have been better than I have seen for some time. If you mark him simply on taking marks in amongst 3 opposition defenders and kicking goals, then you are not doing him any justice. At stoppages in our Forward 50, Pav looks more dangerous for a clearance and goal than anybody else in the team.
When the media were bagging him (a couple of months ago during our wet ball game period), I looked even closer at Pav's contribution. Even then it was very high and it seemed to me everybody was only seeing dropped marks (under pressure).
In my opinion, he's still a champion. You can argue he's past his Best Before date, but his expiry date is still somewhere in the future.
