TOPIC: Ross Is Taking it Well

I'm going to take a glass half full (well 1/3rd at least) - approach. I was at the game and whilst it was not easy to watch or take I genuinely wonder how much our heart was in that game - as DB says - Ross had a business decision to make and I wonder if it was made and we saw the result.
The bombing into the forward line (vs the direct approach in the St Kilda game), the constant sideways and backwards movement and the terrible passing (incl from Fyfe with set shot inside the 50m arc?). But the thing that struck me the most was with 5 mins to go and the slimmest of chances of stealing it we started to go sideways in the back line - really?? a team wanting to win with 5 mins to go, likely nothing to lose % wise and not going the direct route?
It's a dangerous game to play and I'm certainly not sure it was intended but I reckon the A game may have been held off for this coming week - one things for sure we'll be found out this week if our game really is as bad as it appeared.
Time will tell - but as I keep telling myself there's only one team we haven't beaten this year (and to be fair the odds were prettily heavily against us getting the choccies in that game).
Importance of this weekends round has taken on new meaning for many clubs.

Freo got beat by 24 points.

Here's my take on the first four goals of the game;
Goal1. Kennedy nails a tough set shot 50m out.
Freo i50 A. Pearce easy snap missed.
Goal2. Hutchings kicks very tough shot from boundary 40m out.
Freo i50 35m out in front, Free Kick given to Kennedy for no known reason.
Goal3. Bad Turnover by Mzungu, followed by poor defense by him resulting in Shuey running goal.
Goal4. Lycett mark and goal. Lycett pushed Ibbo hands in back no free. i50 came from dodgy A.Pearce Free on wing.
Sandi missed absolute gift from 20m out.

I believe Freo are the best team in the comp (or close to it). But I don't have that much blind faith that I think we can still easily win against another Top4 team when our skills are bad, umpiring is against us and the other team hits every target (including the goals).

Ross is taking it well, better than us it seems!
Usually I agree with Roly not whinging and complaining, control the controllables I think I hear him say.
One thing I reckon he could just "clarify" with the umpiring division head, is the ruck infringement rules. Sandi is missing out on 5 or 6 clearances a game through bad umpiring, namely missed scragging and misinterpretation of the illegal blocking rule. I mean how can you illegally block a bloke when its one on one in the center square and you have your eyes on the ball? You are SUPPOSED to block your opponent - its called using your body and good positioning. The Dockers have got to bring it to the attention of the umpires because every time someone does, that bloke gets more protection the next week.
Maybe even save it for a game against Richmond or the Slime given they perennially lead the free kick differential count.

It's not just bad umpiring that gives another side opportunities and momentum. The players getting pinged then have no idea how much or little contact they can initiate without upsetting the itchy whistle of the umps. The other side also know they can get away with almost anything before a whistle is blown. The mystery whistles a la Kennedy just adds to the confusion.

This is a glaring anomaly of the comp. IIRC, The top team has the poorest stats in FOR frees. The next two, the highest. Logic would dictate if you're a good team often first to the ball, and take a lot of possessions (which WC, Hawthorn and Freo often do), you wouldn't be getting pinged that hard, but the reality seems to be Freo have won, after hard work against average sides, in the face of lopsided free kicks. When you get the same against a team that can score heavily, you get pounded like we did against WC and Hawthorn. Until the umps start putting their whistles away or giving soft ones in neutral territory to make the numbers look somewhat less obvious.

The only time they didn't do that well was the game against the Bulldogs where we garnered 4 frees for the game. A year later against them, we had 2 frees to 3/4 time. We won both games fairly narrowly, so they slip under the radar, but it was the frees and momentum they gave that keeps sides like that in the game.

Getting back to Tabs, he was kicking goals, and when he didn't mark, the ball came to ground to our advantage. His recovery below his knees is good. He draws players away from Pav, and allows Pav to do some damage. People have posted on DL that Pav has looked out of form over the last couple of weeks. Tabs has been out of the side the last couple of weeks. Coincidence?

Following on from Drubbing's excellent point - the classic yesterday for me was in the third quarter. Priddis takes possession just outside our attacking goal square, facing the goal, has a second or two and then gets tackled and the ball drops to the ground with no attempt on his part to kick or handpass the footy. This would have been a certain goal to Freo. The play goes on and heads towards the centre square where the exact same thing happens except it's a Freo player in possession (can't recall who) and the tackle results in a holding the ball free kick. That sort of stuff has nothing to do with Freo discipline - it's inept umpiring.

Fast forward to the final quarter and a West Coast Eagle is tackled on the boundary line in the south side of the Subi forward 50m. The ball spills but doesn't hit the ground and he then punches it to another Eagle resulting in a goal. 999 times out of 1000 that is a throw/illegal disposal. Once again, inept umpiring and nothing to do with Freo's 'lack of discipline'.

Agreed Rags Pav has looked better Tabs in the team, baring in mind a couple of games in very ordinary conditions. like the look of the team with Tabs forward. McPharlin, Johnson and A Pearce down back. Also like Duffield in that back line for his clean ball use Ibbo as the loose and Spurr as the lock down small.

I'm not suggesting umpires can be perfect. The game moves at a fast clip and there's a lot of blokes involved, and the AFL move the goals post all the time. But, when you're not paying frees for one team that you're paying all the time to another, something is seriously wrong and doesn't suggest simple incompetence. It really is ruining the game for me, and for those teams that cop it from dodgy umpiring.

A past player I see socially has told some truths we know. One is the evening up with soft frees after half time - been happening for years. Freo barely gets that 'luxury' anymore, becasue no one bothers to question it. Another, is teams have certain umps that they know are going to crucify them before a ball is bounced.

Lok at the treatment Walters gets. Yes, he ducks and slides way too much and never gets a free. WC, Hawks and Gellong do it at will and get them all the time. Sandliands gets taken out of contests illegally every week and nothing is done. Even Pavlich is going off at umpires, and you never use to see that. I don't beleive it's paranoia, but I think we've got a team that's really frustrated at the treatment its copping, and no one cares, or does anything to try and address it.

I can not recall Hilly ever laying a neck high tackle, but I saw him dish one out yesterday on the southern side boundary line near the wing. The frustration evident in the tackle really did drive home to me that things are not right between the Freo players and the umpiring fraternity.

At this stage of the season Freo should be giving lessons, not taking them. To be talking about lessons learned does not auger well for the finals.
Freo still has time to build momentum but right now the Doggies, Hawks and the Ooftits have the momentum and the confidence to go deep into finals. Only the most optimistic could say Freo are capable of doing the same based on exposed form over the past 6 weeks or so.

Yes RM, that was the first quarter with 1:55 left on the clock.
Yeo dropped the knees, lowered the head and turned left in to the tackle to make it a high tackle. The Free was there. The Slime have been doing it for years and the umps have been paying it for years and the law book still says it's a free (as much as I hate it), so yes, Hill needed to be a bit more careful with the tackle.

Yeo ended up slotting that one through the goals from the boundary 45m out.
Yeo is not a good kick (a great mark, but his kicking needs improving) and that was just typical of the way the day was going for Freo.

Exposed form over the last 6 weeks:
Freo 4W 2L ( Hawks & Eagles)
Eagles 4W 1D (Suns) 1L ( Hawks)
Hawks 5W 1L ( Rich)
Dogs 6W ( all bottom 8 sides)

So on exposed form, not too shabby. Its about the Ws and Ls and the opposition you're up against. I'm backing the purple on that argument to play deep in September/October

The Yeo free that is referred to would be the one that took place within seconds of Spurr punching the ball out of Scos's hands thus denying him an uncontested mark.

Continuing on with my denial conspiracy theory. Can anyone remember the last time that Ross pulled the trigger early on the sub? And Barlow - sure he'd been playing crap but let's face it there's been a few other examples of that over the season and I can't remember the sub being pulled that early in any game (other than injury dictated scenarios)?
