Based on the start, I reckon that's the sleepy/bored tone he addressed the team pre-game.

He makes it all sound so simple.

I think that might be his problem.

He could barely keep the smile off his face. Either he's great at poker, got the last rum 'n' raisin chocolate in the box, or he's very philosophical about that loss.

Perhaps he is happy in having now seen everyone's cards and shown few to the other contenders?

Can only hope but I'm not sure we're that clever.

Have just watched the game with several mates , long term dockers. long term negative dockers i must say, including an all time WAFL great. Attitude negative, sad but true. I am an optimistic and hopefully realistic supporter, and hopefully have seen a positive with todays result. The first quarter was so similar to the Richmond game.Perfect storm. They kicked goals from everywhere, ball bounce was in there favour, umpires gave them everything , and more importantly we were crap! Second quarter we tried but were very poor.
Third quarter, Sandi came out angry , opportunities were wasted, Fyfe was dynamic but we could not make up for the F**kups of others!.
Fyfe gave us the chance in the last quarter but the inadequacies of a few stopped us from having a stirring win.
Deserved to lose but could have pulled off a great result.

mackenzie Lyon is out of line 8 years 7 months ago #7

Just heard the press conference, Ross says that the fans need to get over the free kick count (approx. 7 minute mark).

Bollocks to that. He's out of line cause the count was disproportionate to every other game umpired this weekend (and last weekend too).

He's out of line cause the captain was spitting chips about 5 times to the umps every time I seen it on TV, not whinging, but could be clearly saying that the decision was wrong. 211 even said more than two words to the umps after a ruck infringement today.

He's out of line cause he said that the GWS coach shouldn't approach the umpires when it's not going well and referred to the bulldogs game a year or so back when we got spanked. He should have had the guts to say that we got the rub of the green that day against the Giants, and given our poor history with equitable refereeing, that he understood the frustration.

Finally, as a fan, I can't get over it, I've had a gutful. I can't change it, no matter how much I bitch about it. Only himself and the club have the ability to correct the equability of game day adjudication towards the dockers. This responsibility is not only for himself, but it is his responsibility to demand equal, just and ultimate performance from the players, and he should also hold the opposition, and importantly, the referees that oversee that a fair game is played to that standard.

This is the price of fame and fortune that justifies his position and the substantial monetary reward he gets for doing so.

Furthermore, when you get spanked by the depleted arch rival team, show some fricken enthusiasm to how you're going to fix the same problem that has been occurring all year, or at least for the last 10+ rounds of the season.

I'm sure I'm going to get some heat from you fellow die-hards about top of the ladder etc etc, but I've spewed more inspiring stuff than the garbage he rolled out today.

Lyon needs to get his act together, otherwise, he'll be like Malthouse with an outdated game plan that the game has moved on from. Here is some fundamentals:

i. Develop a plan B, plan A has holes in it.
ii. Call out crappy umpiring,
iii. support your players, and
iv. never, ever, tell the fans to get over it, jerk-ass!!

That's my whinge and frustration vented.

Cheers.

Ross might need reminding that losing a couple of games in a row to those crabs is the best way to get sacked in the off season.

Only himself and the club have the ability to correct the equability of game day adjudication towards the dockers.

That's absolute nonsense. Ranting and raving in the press conference won't do anything except give the players someone else to blame for the loss. It was the players lack of intensity that cost us in the first quarter, it was the lack of sharpness in the second that stopped us narrowing the game sufficiently to put pressure on West Coast in the second half.

Ross knows that if you win the contested ball, win the inside 50s, and win the marks inside 50, more often than not you are going to win the game. Today was one of those days where we didn't. The umpires didn't help, but neither did a pretty insipid performance from some of our normally reliable players. I'd rather he focus on what's causing that than whinging about the umps.

I would like to thank mackenzie for being so diplomatic and well mannered - as if anyone here will ever, ever 'get over it'. If RoLy doesn't get what 'it' is, can someone please ask him to ring mackenzie for a polite chat.

Not for the first time RoLY points to the scoreboard when questioned how the teams are travelling. Is this hubris the pride before the fall? Or does he feel he is restraining the hounds for finals time. We shall see.

I don't care what he says. There's a big difference as to how we're travelling now and for the last few weeks compared to the start of the season.
This sort of form wiil see us blown away very quickly come finals time and where we sit now will count for nothing.
Yes, they had more to play for, but as someone mentioned during the week they were fielding their worst side of the year. They then lost a ruckmen to an acl, a suspected broken jaw who came back on and their one and only key position big backman did a hammy and we still couldn't beat them.
Sorry, we might be sitting on top, but I'm not happy.
Is there another side in the top 8 playing as badly as us at the moment. Perhaps Sydney.
We don't have a lot of time to turn it around.

Roly blaming the umpires just gives the media a headline and is not in Freo's interests. The footy gods have been kind to us this year and while we are on top we all know that we haven't been playing great footy consistently. That is the task ahead. Thats all the club can do. Thats all the players can think about. Umpiring is a side issue and the players have to play in the moment and not look for excuses.
