There are many reasons why Burswood was the worst of the three options in all assessments bar Colin's. Here are just three clangers:
i. COST - you don't build a huge stadium on a flood plain on top of highly unstable soils covering a sewage treatment plant and toxic waste dump without massive cost implications - both initial capital cost and ongoing O&M costs.
ii. ISOLATION - the site is separated from everything by barriers that need additional works to be overcome and then managed eg river, railway, tracts of flood prone land, no access for anything etc. There are also no facilties already established within cooee of the site that complement its intended use or will improve its attractiveness as a venue.
iii. TRANSPORT - every means of getting there has to be built new from scratch: road, rail, bus, taxi, foot, air (for Colin & Bronwyn & AFL heavyweights). Even the preferred mode (rail) will be a far less attractive way of getting there than presently for Subi because of the extra 30mins added on by forcing all southsiders to transfer trains in the city - it will be utter chaos because nothing has been designed to handle such numbers in such a short time. Think Friday evening matches chaos times three.
None of it adds up to me.
