The concept of what Dank was doing was to artificially lift naturally occurring chemicals to a level that was within natural levels; using legal methods. So someone low in Chemical A would get pushed up to the level of someone high in Chemical A. It was supposed to help recovery.

So it's not a result that can get someone banned, as I understand it, it's just a piece of the puzzle but it seems like the first thing you do as an anti-doping authority is to run all the tests.

the test wasn't available earlier. According to the article its a recent retesting of the stored samples.

There has been information recently put into the public domain of new testing procedures, including for TB4. You can hardly blame ASADA for not being able to reach into the future.

I reckon if I had a say in the running of a multi billion dollar sporting competition and I had information to suggest that one of the teams in that competition could have the majority of its squad suspended for drug offences, then one possible plan of action would be to prolong those inevitable suspensions as long as possible to reduce the impact of those suspensions.
15 of those 34 tested have played in 2015 for Essendon (38 Essendon players have played so far in 2015).
By the time any drug suspensions are handed out, the majority of those guilty players will no longer be regular Essendon players.

ASADA did not have the samples analysed for the presence of TB4 at Cologne, for reasons that are unclear.

Sources said WADA, in its brief, offered no explanation in the brief for ASADA's failure to have this testing information. Sources with a knowledge of the case said ASADA would come under attack in the upcoming hearing for a failure to present, or locate, such evidence in the first hearing.

If, just say, Essendon had kept records of when and with what players were injected. Then we could look at the tested samples and say, "These were collected on dd/mm/yy and just 3 days before they received an injection from the club". That would be fairly damning. It is lucky for Essendon that they didn't keep records.

Were the players made to sign some sort of confidentiality document?
It just seems very odd that no one questioned what they were being injected with.
If my son came home from training and told me he had been injected with a substance I'd have been on the case straight away and I feel I'm not the only parent who would feel that way. So why didn't that happen, how did it go on for so long?

The reason ASADA didn't have them tested for TB4 is because there was no test for TB4 at he time the samples were first taken. Testing was undertaken in Cologne and that was in evidence given at the AFL tribunal and those tests were incom=nclusive but showed ASADA they were on the right track. That was from Andruska, who head of ASADA at the time this commenced.

There still isn't a direct test for TB4 but a test for IGF-1 markers that are affected by TB4....and thats a recently developed test. (No, I'm not a doctor but I've been doing some reading...and not just The Age)

I should imagine those 'sources' are likely to be the players lawyers but in the absence of any identification, I wouldn't just accept those comments without some reservations.

Either way, It puts a new light on the tribunal's finding that they can't be satisfied that there was TB4 in the TB4 that was found it's way to Essendon.

Still lets wait and see what happens rather than rely on a half baked reporting.

We already waited and saw it. ASADA bollocksed it up.

Those tests aren't new. WADA are just drawing new conclusions based on the same data ASADA didn't collect*. ASADA didn't have two weeks in early 2015 to organise their case. They weren't under pressure to push out a quick result. They had years and they didn't show up with one bit of actual evidence.

Well, not actually in the upcoming hearing, but in the positioning campaign conducted around the hearing in the media, the stuff we are currently hearing from the Bummers CEO and of course, the unnamed "sources". Their hope is that public opinion will influence the court, or, if not, at least they can run a we-was-robbed line after losing the case without looking like complete turkeys, to Essendon supporters anyway.

The hearing itself is de novo, meaning that it is a new case not an extension of the previous one. New evidence and arguments can be used and old evidence needs to be put forward again.
