TOPIC: Now Jay Schulz?

This week's target forward is Jay Schulz. Ticks all the boxes in my book and would be a useful pick up.

But I doubt he'd want to move unless he got paid and we shouldn't pay overs for anyone.

Doesn't tick many boxes for me. He is a straight kick but doesn't kick that many goals and has already turned 30 for chrissakes. And they're talking about Aaron Black again!

We should go for Usain Bolt. If we can teach him to kick straight he'd be awesome on a quick lead...

Since arriving at Port Schulz has kicked:
2010 - 33 goals
2011 - 31
2012 - 42
2013 - 49
2014 - 66
2015 - 35 goals so far
total = 256
In that same time period Pav has kicked:
2010 - 61 goals
2011 - 21
2012 - 69
2013 - 25
2014 - 46
2015 - 32 goals so far
total = 254
Why are we sticking it up Schulz as being crap? He is thirty, a durable player, we only need him for two or three seasons till our young blokes mature. If we can get him cheap lets give it a go (cheap being the proviso for signing him).

Going by Ross' reaction to the mention of 'Aaron Black' on PR last night I think you can rule about 6 lines through his name. He's no chance.

Schulz kicked 60 odd goals last year and has 35 from 17 games this year in a team that has struggled. He is one dimensional though in a funny kind of way that might help us because he doesn't like getting too far away from the goal square and would give us at least one forward permanently camped inside the forward 50.

At some stage the penny will drop with coaches that in order to score you need at least three link players to hold their positions for the fast break to work. No reason if Schulz came to us why he could not be one of those players. The current mass around the ball looking to handball short and chip kick can be beaten. It's how Richmond beat the Hawks and us. Instead of guarding space they tackled the crap out of the guys in close, when the turnover came they had loose players generally on a wing, the half forward line and a tall forward. They kicked the ball to these guys making their opposition look slow and confused. If you look carefully you can see that most of the guys in those huge packs at stoppages have little to zero impact on play. It is still yours Fyfe, Suban, Priddis (spew) types that get in and get the ball moving.

Okay bp, fair comment. I didn't realise his output was so similar to Pav's. Yes then as you say as long as he's cheap. I'm hoping he'd be more of a foil for Pav than a direct replacement though.

I never, like a lot of others, quite got the idea of recruiting so many midfielders. We were told at the time(admittedly by Bond) that there were no good prospects in last year's draft and we would be on the look out next year. Now it turns out that this year's draft is even more shallow with our finishing position giving us very little chance of picking up a kpp. Unless we can manage some swap of midfielders for one that is.
Are there no decent mature age key position players worth a go in VFL, SANFL or WAFL?

I hope Pav goes around again next year (at least).
In my eyes, Pav has been playing some great footy this year. I know he copped a fair bit of criticism a couple of months ago, but I felt that was very much unwarranted. Some of his work up the field this year, including long passes to players inside 50 or in the corridor have been superb. He has had some involvement in many if not most of our goals.
I mention this, because I don't think we can go out there and find a Pav replacement.
I think the last thing Roly's game plan wants is a typical full forward who remains a target deep in the 50. Schulz might be ok. But you'd be very lucky to get 50 games out of him, so he would really just be a gap filler anyways. We'd be better off with Pav, if we can convince him to keep going.

Pardon my ignorance but what is Schulz' situation at PA? FA, RFA, OoC?
What's his pay packet at this time? Does anyone know?
What's he worth?
He's a good mark, good lead, good kick. Worth a punt (so to speak).

According to the Perthnow article I read, he's going to be offered substantially less from Port who don't have a lot of wriggle room in their salary cap. They want to sure up a few younger players with contracts and he wants to extend his career. Freo are reportedly considering a 2 year deal

Love your optimism DockerKnockers but there are far greater prospects of getting 50 games out of Schulz than there are out of Pav. I reckon Pav's about 90% to retire at the end of this season and about 10% to go on for one more year. Much of that will depend on the GF result.

Does that imply then that you're 90% certain that we'll win the Flag this year

I'm just saying, Pav's a veteran so you can pay him ... what is it about 120k over what you're paying Schulz per year (in terms of Salary cap) and probably get a better result. Schulz is not likely to step straight in to a Roly game plan and produce anything better.

It's not too often players walk away from a salary of 400k+/yr nowadays, unless they are pushed or injured.

I would think differently if Schulz was 28yrs or less, but he's only 3yrs younger than Pav.

Wouldn't surprise me if all three of Pav, Elvis and Sandi play on next year regardless of the granny.
Sandi, I'm sure, has already committed.
All three are in good enough nick and are often enough outplaying the opposition - so, why wouldn't they?
