Can you just change them in the middle of the season now?

FOUR sets of eyes are better than three, according to the AFL, which is set to put four field umpires in charge for the first time for premiership points at the Gabba on Saturday night, The Australian reports.

Sure, I get the point - get another set of eyes out there to cover any blind spots. Problem is the set of eyes come with a whistle - even at the best of times, it is habitual human behaviour to simply have a toot on something dangling around your neck. For me, this initiative will increase stoppages by 25% - do we need more stoppages?

If it does increase stoppages, it will only do it for the few games they decide to experiment in.

It's buggering about with the integrity of the game. If Brisbane decided they were going to experiment with playing 4 ruckmen, they'd be investigated by the AFL.

A four clown circus was always better than three.

Total agreement, our game has far too many rules and far to many sub clauses to those rules. I am surprised umpires have not spontaneously combusted just thinking about the many combinations and interpretations there are. I dare say the code breakers at Blechly Park England in their hay day would have struggled to make sense of them. Give me something as simple as splitting the atom any day.

They also changed the ducking rule mid season so yeah they do.

If both clubs are OK with it then I've got no problem with trials like this when it's two teams with nothing to play for.

We can't get three sensible umpires for any game, what hope for getting four? For a short period after Gieschen went the umpiring got better. Now, whoever takes the mid week umpy school revision is on LSD, it's all over the place.

BTW - how are Wayne Cambell's Richmonds frees F/A including inside fifty?

Maybe they just want more available witnesses for any potential tanking investigation.

I'm expecting them to experiment with only one field umpire this week in our game against the Saints.
And that would be #3 Leigh Fisher ... he can see frees from 100m away.
Gone to bigfooty where there's fewer Docker Haters.

I agree totally with prior comments. Its analogous to the DRS system in cricket. It disrupts the flow and reduces the spectacle. I think if we were honest with ourselves, we LIKE witnessing human error, it is entertainment in its own right. Oh the joy when a soft push in the back leads to a free at point blank range for our side. The outrage when our man is pinged for improper disposal after being collected in the head.

Why must we have perfection in umpiring???

I don't think anyone is asking for perfection, just a bit more consistency in the more easily interpreted ones.

Not sure how an extra ump will create more stoppages. The suggestions seem to be that paying more free kicks will decrease stoppages.

Eyebrows copped it from most on here, but can anyone say things have been better in his absence? Sure, he bullied everyone in the league to get his own way, but he was more reluctant to make in-game rules on the fly, and he would have handled the Adam Goodes thing with a bit more clout.

As for four umpires, I'm fine with if it means that the best umpires can call multiple games, or extend their careers. But if you needed data surely you pencil in a bunch of rounds next year for a trial (ie, all teams experience it), with a view to full implementation in 2017.
