TOPIC: Kicking Skills

On the Weller thread it was mentioned that he had elite kicking skills. That had been mentioned when he was first drafted and seen regularly in his games for Peel. It had me thinking that with our terrible ball use, missing targets, etc over the last few weeks, are we picking players who have the best skills, and if not, why not?

Why have our ball skills gone off lately when they were so good at the start of the year?

We have guys on the outer at the moment in Duffield and Pearce whose ball skills are usually very good, but we seem to be willing to give games to players who regularly miss targets and cause turnovers. e.g. Sheridan, Sutcliffe, although certainly weren't on their own on Sunday.

Blakely and Langdon have been talked up here and rightly so. Obviously a different level but they seem to have good ball skills. Anybody seen enough of them to comment? Would they be better value than some we're playing now?

Could it be that there is a lot of emphasis on moving the ball on quickly and they've become so conscious of it that they're over/under thinking it and making crap decisions and shocking kicks? We seem to be too close to the contest and so hand pass to the player next to them and keep the ball in congestion. Horrible to watch and yet there we are on top of the ladder.

Thing is most of our players can kick the ball reasonably well. Problem being but is this perception that we have poor skills, that we aren't playing as fast tempo as the first few rounds.

What I witnessed though on the weekend was the players were rushing at the wrong times, and going slow at the wrong times. There were a number of cases where they missed the first lead which if they had have hit it they were off and out of there.

But if they miss that first link up then there are a few chip kicks around the backline until enough space can be found up the ground..

On the flip side there were a number of times we tried to move the ball quickly, but often the receiver was either stationary or the wrong receiver. So my question would be if they are calling for the ball and they are hot.. well stop trying to be like brendan goddard and demanding the ball at the wrong time.. Or they pull a dawson and hand it off but forget the shepherd the receiver

Perhaps the simple idea fix is that we simply need to spread a bit better, but whilst in theory it sounds simple it might take a bit more tweaking to get right.
