TOPIC: Dawson - Two weeks

There is a mistake you guys are making in your assessment of "high impact". You might think that "high impact" might refer to the damage done to the player on the receiving end. But you'd be wrong. It is the impact on the Mums of junior footy players. Concussion doesn't have much impact on Mum. But blood does. Zac's elbow had a high impact on Mums around Australia. Ditto with Fyfe last year. A head clash without blood and he would have been lucky to be reported.

The constant denigration and personal ridicule of Dawson by some, reminds me of how WCE supporters carry on toward some of their own......unique company to be in.

No, just the reality of comparing players in the best backline in the AFL.

Compare the following attributes:

- Rarely beaten one-on-one, good footy smarts, good decision maker, rapidly improving
- First game back, gives away free kicks in the forward line, only punches the ball, zero tackles, gets suspended.

A. Pearce (9 games) vs Z. Dawson (142 games).

Then let me be insightful:

Z. Dawson
14 disposals: 5 contested, 9 uncontested
5 marks: 1 contested, 4 uncontested
Tackles: 0 Frees for: 0. Frees against:2. 1% ers: 4
Played entire game. Did keep Cameron to 2.3.

A. Pearce:
12 disposals: 7 contested, 7 uncontested
5 marks: 0 contested, 5 uncontested
Tackles: 3. Frees for: 3. Frees against: 0. 1% ers: 2. Goals: 1.
Subbed off early 4th quarter.

Did I mention Alex has played 9 games?

There's a difference between being analytical on data and personal denigration, which was my point. I'm not arguing with how he plays, in fact I don't like it, just like I don't like how some of our supposed forwards can't mark the ball too often, but they keep getting games.

Now Jordan and the head removing swipe and Hodge and Mitchell who has caused a medium term injury on Fyfe, why such low level punishment for these players.

Cameron got 2 goals on Dawson.
1 of them was a ticky touch free kick on the goal line when Dawson didn't quite hide the fistful of jumper that he had, well enough. I could find a similar action by an opposition player against Pav or Sandi virtually every week which is not paid a free kick.
The second goal was in the last qtr when Dawson ran off Cameron to spoil what was certain to be an uncontested mark to a GWS player about 60m out. Dawson got there in time to give it the double fist in to the corridor. The loose ball went to GWS players who then passed it inside 50 to Cameron who scored a goal. Had Dawson not left Cameron and gone the spoil, that looked like it would have most certainly ended up a GWS goal anyways.
I also saw Cameron get another easy uncontested mark when Dawson ran off him to provide pressure on another GWS forward. Hill should have picked up Cameron but left him unchecked.
Dawson got suspended for an elbow to Cameron in the first qtr during a 10 second passage of play where Dawson beat Cameron to a loose ball, punched the ball to McPharlin, Dawson then gets a two handed shove in the back from Cameron. Dawson follows up and again wins the loose ball in a contest with Cameron, gets a little scrag from Cameron when on the ground, so Dawson makes his point in the argument with the elbow and unfortunately cops him in the nose instead of the body. Had Dawson been Hodge or Judd there would have been no suspension.
Yep, I'm onboard the A.Pearce bandwagon like most/all of us here, but I doubt A.Pearce would have done as good a job on Cameron.
Have your fun with your Dawson criticisms, but if you watch a little more carefully, you may realise how much he adds to the teams defence.
Gone to bigfooty where there's fewer Docker Haters.

ZeD is a klutz. If he prime attribute is being able to punch the ball he is obviously very limited in his value. Bring him in when we are facing three quality talls, otherwise he becomes a liability. His game on the weekend was ordinary. If a first gamer made decisions like double fisting a potential mark which then hands over a shot on goal to the opposition we'd have reservations about them. ZeD's MO is to offload responsibility to others around him. He'll randomly punch the ball away and hope for the best, he'll handball to anyone even if they are under the pump and hope for the best, he kicks the ball with less conviction than Sandi ... and then hopes for the best.
I don't doubt that he is a nice guy and gives it a red hot crack, but I hope we have moved beyond ZeD being in our best 22.

I kind of like the idea of a large physical ball destroying enforcer playing on the edge of insanity running around our backline. It calms me, as well as balancing out all the nice and fair players we have. We lack physical intimidation and Zac brings that to our game, mostly because you don't know when one of his pointy bits is going to smash into your goolies, ribs or larynx. Fyfe was suspended more than The Fist last year and I don't see anyone calling for his dismissal. I love McPharlan but he made more clangers than Zac on the weekend, do we also load him into the cannon and fire him out into the harbour? Lets not eat our own, lets be Freo, Zac wears purple so for me he is one of the good guys.

Walter, as I saw it that double fist into the corridor was never there to be marked. The only reason he punched into the corridor was because he could only just get to it. It was, I think, the correct play at the time. A lucky bounce and it wouldn't have ended up a goal to GWS.

And all cynicism about the MRP aside, I'm very disappointed that they call that "high impact" and give him an extra week for it. You don't need "high impact" to cause a blood nose, and given that Cameron played on apparently unhindered by his shocking injury, you'd have to say that it wasn't high impact, and that the club, in this of all cases, should challenge.
