TOPIC: Random Idea - More interchanges

I've been thinking......

With all the whinging about the state of the game, our style of play etc, what effect would it have if you had unlimited interchanges and more people on the bench - like say 10 people?

Think about it:
i. Would force coaches to seriously think about balancing between having great players stay on the field for longer vs having lesser quality players rotating through
ii. Encourage more running and open play as players can exert more effort and run further and longer
iii. Would make the coaches really think about who they have on the field at any given point. At the moment it is the stock standard 2 x big forwards, 2 x big backmen, 1 x ruckmen and the rest midfielders. You could go through a phase in the game where you totally change that makeup
iv. A chance to prolong careers / bring on more younger players

Downsides:
i. More fresh people could actually lead to more congestion
ii. Could start to look like American football
iii. I know - less talent spread around, equalization where good teams stock up on talent etc etc

I know, status quo. It is OK as is. Don't change anything. It's been this way for 100 years etc.

Just a thought....

It would mean that if you sit behind the bench you won't be able to see most of the game for all the players standing at the interchange gate.

I love this idea and have thought about it for a while, how many of our recent recruits have had the words 'elite aerobic capacity' in their two paragraph blurb, I'd much prefer to see more along the lines of 'elite disposal off both feet' or 'needs to slim down but is great overhead' than how they can run all day. The beep test is only so important because under the current climate coaches need players who can run for two hours straight. Yes there will potentially be more congestion, but if you have players who can mark and dish off to others who can kick it has to be a positive for game. Also will add years to some players careers.

i think the whole reason for the cap is that the evidence (flimsy? inconclusive?) was suggesting that high rotations were actually leading to more injuries

so, perhaps we need a double blind randomised trial to work it out. maybe a job for Stephen Dank.

The AFL is very thorough in their research of player injuries. Unfortunately the results take so long to publish, they're pretty much out of date by the time they're released.

This is the latest report released (unfortunately some of the findings contradict each other...

"There was a statistically-significant increase in both injury incidence and prevalence over the years 2008-2013 (“High interchange era”) compared to the years 2002-2007 (“Low interchange era”)," the report stated.

"Hamstring strains are still the number one injury in the game in terms of both incidence and prevalence (missed games)."

It was found that hamstring and groin injury incidence and prevalence in the three-year period 2011-2013 (since the introduction of the substitute rule) were both significantly lower than the previous three-year period 2008-2010 but, in contrast, calf, knee tendon and other leg/foot/ankle injury incidence and prevalence were significantly higher in the recent three-year period 2011-2013 compared to 2008-2010).

Coaches want more interchanges and more players on the bench so they can sit back and polish off the coke and the salad rolls without distractions, ie they don't have to think about tactics or where to play players, just interchange them. The other possibility is that they have noticed the correlation between players coming off for an interchange and goals being kicked, and they think more interchanges = more goals

I've got a somewhat related questions. With players coming off every few minutes for a breather, why do we need 20 bloody water carriers on the ground every time play stops?

FreDoh, it's one thing to report a statistically significant increase in injuries. It is another altogether to point to reliable evidence of the cause of that increase...

I think its because we no longer have a magic sponge or oranges at the breaks.

The solution is to move to what they do in soccer and rugby, have say eight players on the interchange but when you come off you don't come back on.

The great mids rest in the fwd pocket like they did in the glory days. It will solve congestion because you won't put the 27th best player on cause he has fresh legs.

I like the radical thinking, but I think fewer interchanges would be preferable.

The AFL could obviously reduce the interchange cap (perhaps move to 80 next season), but I’d also like the AFL to limit players interchanging to the time between goals. Too often the play is affected by the luck of when someone steps onto the ground, and sooner or later someone is going to get seriously injured by getting whacked by an unseen opponent coming off the bench.

In order to accommodate injuries, you could allow interchanges for injured players, but anyone coming off the ground during play would not be permitted to return to the field for the rest of the quarter.

Thoughts?

I'm not sure which side of the fence I'd like to take yet but I do know a lot of teams slow down play and chip the footy around when they are tired or get a lead and want to conserve energy (an RL staple). More interchanges/a larger bench would help stop that and in turn promote more attacking footy.
Nathan: When did you get balls?
Simon: I've always had balls you've just never seen them.
Nathan: That's the gayest thing I've ever heard.

Fre doh I think you are right. Injuries were correlated with the speed of the game. The thinking was less interchange = more fatigue = less injury.

However I think the game compensates in different ways. Fitter players as an example.

I don't have an opinion either way.

The AFL is seriously looking at capping interchanges to 80 next season. They believe reducing the number of interchanges will force players to stay at home more often, thereby reducing the ugly congestion which plagues the modern game.

Unfortunately such a move could also affect the type of player teams will draft. They'll give preference to elite running machines over talented footballers who are not pure athletes.

Then again the AFL were considering a 'reset the sub' rule last year which never eventuated.
