With 9 minutes left in the first quarter Tommy Sheridan has the ball and kicks to a leading SonSon who is about to mark some 30-35 m out on a slight angle.
Ump away from the play blows his whistle and gives D Pearce a free further out from where the ball was going to land.
I thought in those cases the free would be paid at the fall of the ball not 20-30 m further away. Pearce missed the shot while Walters may have marked the ball much closer to goal if the maggot hadn't stopped the play.

Did anyone else notice it?

Yes, there was 2 of those tonight, and we saw another case of advantage paid to Freo where there was none, with the same happening to the Tigers, but it is brought back for the free.

Advantage is now applied at the point where the free kick count is to far out of kilter to be able to give the free to the team that the umpires would prefer to win the game. At this point the umpires are able to apply the advantage rule and therefore ensure that the greatest "advantage" is awarded to said team.

But a few decisions were strange ones, especially those in front of Richmond's goal.

My favourite umpiring decision was the push given against Mundy in the Richmond forward 50. Mundy facing the ruck contest, goes to (very fairly) push opponent in the side, but opponent has turned his back, so Mundy ends up pushing him in the back - thus helping his opponent go in the direction he wanted to go. Free kick. WTF?

If you want to talk strange free kick decisions I have to bring up the one against big Sandi in a centre bounce where he went up with the knee ( like an old school ruckman ) hence knocking the other player out of the contest and tapped it down. The umpire payed a free kick against him ... I thought that was just good old fashioned dominant ruck work

Seemed like the free was paid because he was too 'dominant' which begs the question is it his fault if he is just too good for the other guy ?
