But we're really bad at doing what we were really good at doing for nine rounds of the season. Really bad.
Why?

Pavlich willed the team over the line today.
Unfortunately, hodge out wills even Pavlich and most the time he doesn't even need to because his team just play footy better anyway.

Hand them the cup and start next pre-season now.

What a defeatist attitude.

We're top of the ladder after Round 17, 1-2 games clear, and we want to give up now?

Lots to work on, but we're building again.

Some of the pessimism here truly saddens me. Some time in September or October we'll face the Hawks again and I'm backing our blokes to get the job done.

We missed our fair share of goals too but they were earlier in the game and the commentators conveniently forget that. Easy ones too. D. Pearce should have had two or three in the first quarter. Fyfe missed an easy one and there were plenty more. But because Richmond hit the post alot they should have won? I thought we should have been 3-4 up at half time.

Having said all that we played some bloody awful footy. The handballing into trouble is killing us and there were errors in this game I haven't seen from a Freo side for 5 years. Roly would have gone berserka in the change rooms afterwards. We have a week to turn it round because gws will be no walk over.

It looked like Richmond's inaccuracy was the difference, but we kicked some oobotf, and dropped some short of the goals. The game was as close as it looked.

i) Twas a good game of football
ii) We are far more effective when we a) get the ball out of congestion to moving players and b) hit targets
iii) We are less effective when we a) handball to the bloke standing nextdoor and b) bomb forward
iv) Richmond, again, move the ball forward easily with short kicks to leading targets. Teams have done this to us of late - if they hold their nerve and not bomb, it's very effective
v) We play better when I'm standing up and pacing, rather than feet up on the couch

We're missing First Johnno and - to a lesser extent - the vision of Duffman.
Our boys have the guts, and skills, to beat shit sides into humiliation in front of their own fans.
I haven't learnt anything about other teams because I don't care.

1) The First has his place. I'm no Dawson fan, but I reckon we could've done with him in the backline today. How many contested marks i50 did they win?

The Wee-Poos have lost more games than us, they just haven't lost to Richmond (and probably won't) and haven't lost (by a big margin) to us (yet). They look good because they are certain - beating them (as others have shown) is done by making them uncertain.

Our problem is an inability to do anything other than just try harder - as much as RoLy had a spack-attack at 3/4 time, I think it finally dawned on him that smarmying on about 'writing your own story' actually means being smarter and more inventive than other story-tellers out there. You keep telling the same story and everyone will stop listening to it, others simply won't believe it anymore (no matter how hard of an effort you put into it), and there won't be any point of writing anything until you actually write something different.

What I learnt this round? It's great beating a bunch of over-blown pussies in front of their Mommys - 2 pts, 200 pts, it don't matter.

i) Definitely seeing some signs of us turning the corner, especially with trying to get quick ball movement...whilst there were numerous shocking turnovers as a result of taking more risks, I'm happy that we are at least going for it, as there were quite a number of "nearly" moments for us to get over the back of Richmond. We are definitely capable of it (as is evident from the first 9 rounds), so maybe it's a confidence thing, but once that grows and we start hitting our targets again, look out...
ii) Old man Pav has still got it...
iii) Some of the gut running from Hill, Barlow, Sheridan is just brilliant to watch...
iv) Top 2 is ours to lose from here, looking forward to 2 home finals, anything can happen from there..

I said earlier in one of these posts, so far this season Freo have won all the close matches we have played.. Where as hawthorn dropped a few of the close ones. When it comes finals time, I would be more comfortable knowing when the pressure is on we have been able to pull thrown in the tight ones.. The 2 losses this season could be somewhat abberations. although of the past 3 weeks we got the closest to hawthorn.

Currently you could almost say we are cruising, we are winning without playing great football, meanwhile hawks have probably realised that with both freo and slime occupying spots in the top 4, they need to ramp it up earlier than they probably had have hoped to try and get a top 2 finish, otherwise they realise it could mean 2 trips to perth to be able to make the grand final. There is still plenty of time left in the season. Can the hawks maintain that type of form till the end of the season? Who knows. We will find out in october.
