Surely you jest.

They pulled that one out of the "Vintage rules from previous decades" bag.

The huge issue is the trend of enforcement.

One week there's a crackdown on push in the back, the next week it's incorrect disposal. You'd almost expect to turn up to the footy and see a variant of those country highway road safety signs; "Local umpires are now enforcing headhigh tackles". The only consistency is the inconsistency.

How many times in the first quarter do the commentators say something akin to "the umpires are cracking down on rule x, clearly the message has gone out from umpire HQ during the week" ? And we all wait to see how the new umpiring will affect the fabric of games that weekend.

Not that many weeks ago there was a record low number of free kicks on a Friday night and the approach was celebrated. Now a few weeks later the pendulum has swung ... again.

All the changes highlight just how much impact the umpiring focus on a particular weekend can affect the result. Nobody wants to watch a sport where the umpires heavily influence the result with subjective rules enforced subjectively and it's as frustrating as hell.

Ironically it's the attempts to fix the game that are breaking it.

Morgan, my point is that it was no "new rule" and to my understanding, never has been a rule.
If umpires and commentators would read the Laws and apply them as written I would not get so frustrated.
It's prohibited contact and it doesn't matter whether you use your foot, knee, chest, head, arms or hands. Call it prohibited contact or push in the back or incidental contact in the back, but hands in the back is misleading.
As the Laws are written if a player has both hands in the back of his opponent, then it is fine, so long as he/she does not push them with those hands. If a player gives his opponent a gentle hip and shoulder in the back and pushes them under the flight of the ball and takes the mark ... then it's a free and has been for a long time.
Gone to bigfooty where there's fewer Docker Haters.

"hands in the back" is not a rule; it's a "cue" that the umpires look for to assess whether there's a push in the back.

Back to the OP: there was one sensible comment in the Duffield article (was it from Todd?), besides the point about enforcing the rules that already exist, and it was about a slightly stricter interpretation of deliberate OOB. I'd back that.

How many Dockerlanders want the "hit the post" rule changed to play on or give the score for which side of the post the ball went? I missed the results of the first poll.

While we're on about interpretations how about deliberate rushed behinds.
If you recall the Hawks took the tactic of deliberately rushing behinds to regain possession in the 2008 GF v Geelong to a new level. There was much gnashing of teeth over the tactic so in 2009 they started paying frees for deliberate rushed behinds which kept the ball in play & the excitement levels high when the ball was around the goal as players were reluctant to force it thru knowing they'd be pinged.
When was the last time a kick was paid for this?
Here's the rule below. It says nothing about the player being under pressure making it ok. It says "give the benefit of the doubt to the defender". I read that "doubt" to be referring to whether it was "intentional" not whether the defender was under pressure, which is how it is applied ~100% of the time.

How can not keeping the ball alive around the goal be better for the game?

15.7 FREE KICKS – DELIBERATE RUSHED BEHIND
15.7.1 When Awarded
(a) A Free Kick shall be awarded against a Player from the defending
Team who intentionally Kicks, Handballs or forces the football
over the attacking Team’s Goal Line or Behind Line or onto one of
the attacking Team’s Goal Posts. In assessing whether a Free Kick
should be awarded under this Law, the field Umpire shall give the
benefit of the doubt to the Defender.

Last free kick for deliberate rushed behind? Maybe Stephen Dodd - which gives you an idea how long ago it was.
