TOPIC: Fix Our Game

...say three footy greats (back page of today's Worst)

Although my ADD prevented me from finishing the article, I think it's safe to assume there was nothing about "prevent commentators from attempting to convince the public how clever they are while actually displaying how truly stupid they are"

If it's the West, the game is already fixed. They've convinced most casual footy readers that donuts is an outright legend of the modern era.

John Todd has got it right. Enforce the laws in the book already, don't try to make new laws that you are not going to enforce properly(ie hands in the back, prior opportunity, front on bumps, head clashes) All changes that were supposed to improve the game , but that have done nothing fore the game, and are not consistently applied anyway.

Very simple solution - de-register the slime.

It's not so much the addition of new rules, it's directing the umps to interpret what they already have, differently. Now they're even doing it mid-season, which ensures inconsistency and confusion.

Not that it matters that much when some of the umpires are cheats.

RM, some of those rules weren't made to make the game better, but to make it safer. There's a big difference.

Personally, I like the 'hands in the back' rule. It was too hard for umps to tell when a push was hard enough to be a push, so they made it a 'bright line' rule. Umps still mess it up from time to time, but that's how it goes.

Our game is fine. People don't remember the lousy round 16 games played between rubbish teams from 15 years ago - in part because there was only one or two games televised a week - so when a bad game is played now it's compared to the sepia-tinged memories of the great games of bygone eras. It's not a like-for-like comparison.

The best games of today stack up favourably to the best games of any era.

Ask anyone saying footy was better in the 70's what the best era of music was. You'll be shocked to find out it was also the 70's. Just an odd coincidence I suppose.

Just dropped off the cheques to the umpires. Consider the game fixed.

Morgan the rules to make the game safer are the same as the ones to make the game better, they are not umpired with any consistency whatsoever, so why are they brought into the rule book. The head high contact is a perfect example. When Fyfe and Ballas hit players high in incidental contact they got weeks. How many Freo players have been hit high with the hitter not being penalised with suspension. (yes I know players from other teams get hit high too, but the ratio of Freo penalties, free kicks and suspensions is much higher against than for)

Morgan, if you can show me in the AFL Laws of 2015 the "hand in the back" ruling, I'd much appreciate it.
That is, my frustration is, we don't follow the Laws as they are written. Nor do we talk about them as they are written.

I'll save you some time ... 15.4.5 Prohibited Contact ... (b) pushes an opposition Player in the back, unless such contact is incidental to a Marking contest and the Player is legitimately Marking or attempting to Mark the football.
Gone to bigfooty where there's fewer Docker Haters.

I understand that, but how many hands in the back / push in the back marking decisions upset you today?

It took the dumber players a month to get used to the rule, and Matthew Richardson three months, but it hasn't been an issue for years, and we get the benefit of blokes not deciding to go the shove to the bloke and front to see if they can get away with it.

Good result.

Well Richmond picked up several, including a boot that was used by Spurr I think to push an opponent out of a contest. Ibbo alone had 4 or 5 that weren't paid, and that is without watching a replay.

Pav got pinged today for dropping the ball. When was the last time that rule was enforced?

another 3 or 4 times against various Freo players today, and most weeks in the last 18.

What about the "push" in the back supposedly by Mundy on Cotchin, which gifted him a shot at goal (which he thankfully missed)? That was an absolute stinker..
