I maybe off the mark, but I thought the crowds at the major venues are pretty healthy ... it's the smaller venues that just aren't pulling the numbers.
That is, MCG, Adelaide, Subi & SCG are going well.
Gone to bigfooty where there's fewer Docker Haters.

What about two levels of comp? 1v 9 is likely to have more chance of being a decent game than 1 v 18 and each comp would have a couple of byes to refresh players. You'd then get relegation and promotion. As has been pointed out, seriously who will watch the Blues v Hawks apart from Hawks fans and diehard Blues.

And speaking purely as a Freo supporter, we might be winning more now, but we were more fun to watch in 2003 and 2006. If all you care about is winning, you don't actually have to be there and watch it.

Mind you, I did really enjoy winning the derby earlier this season.

Give them a quality opened up game at decent price.
The game needs more 1/1 2/2 contests & less of the 36 players in 1/3 of the ground.

The talent pool is far too diluted.
There's far too many blokes running around AFL clubs who shouldn't be playing at the elite level us/Freo included.
Get the best players playing against each other more often.
12/13/14 team comp
22/24/26 game season each teams plays each other twice.
Make the Vic's travel more i.e. make it less attractive to want play for a Vic team in that regard.
Lose/reduce preseason games.

The rest are just musing out loud.

16 players/team on the field.
4 reserves - 80 interchanges 20/qtr.
3 players/team in the square at bounce downs.
18min + time on qtrs.
Minimum of 2/3 players from each team at all times inside the respective 50m arcs.

Encourage scoring, perhaps award bonus points to teams that score +90 pts wet 120+ dry

Penalize throws, pushes in the back (not just in marking contests ) & obvious deliberate forced behinds keep the game alive near the goals.

Free kick if the ball goes out from the boot regardless if it's on the full outside the 50m arc = less congested ball in's

Ball comes back into play off any post - play on.

Kick backwards i.e back inside your own defensive 50 - play on

Don't blow the whistle if advantage exists - raise the hand (ala rugby) too often the whistle stops the play.

Throw the ball up at all times (~25% of center bounces are either recalled or they are to advantage of one of the teams)

Cut the grass in 15m segments to give the umps some idea what 15m is, the inconsistency/cheating at the moment is a blight on the game.

Umpire the game from the 1st bounce of the season like they do if scores are level with 5 min's to go in the GF.

I've stopped watching. No Carlton player is going to get near Mitchell to give him what he deserves (for the entertainment of course).

Predictably this one has come up.
"Ball comes back into play off any post - play on."

I can live with this for the point posts but consider this.
A team is one point down and have a kick after the siren.
The ball hits the post and bounced back onto the field. Under the above suggestion, the team loses by a point. A less accurate kick would have resulted in a point and a drawn game ... from a worse kick. It doesn't make sense.

Used to enjoy my Friday night footy but cant be bothered watching the game tonight.
Why have Carlton been allowed to hijack this timeslot (6 times this year) when recent years their form has been piss poor and not deserving of "blockbuster" games.
