TOPIC: AFL 360... what Ross should do

guy smiley AFL 360... what Ross should do 8 years 8 months ago #1

When I'm up here at work I enjoy the quiet relaxation that comes with free Foxtel in the room and the opportunity to put the feet up after a hard day's toil single handedly propping up the nation's economy to catch the accumulated wisdom of shows like SkyNews and The Footy Channel...

which may lead the more enlightened among you to draw some solid conclusions about the occasional need to vent that may be present in my posts...

so, anyway last night I caught a segment where Football Analyst David King suggested some areas where teams could try some options to counter the apparent dominance of Hawthorn. He took pains though, to his credit, to point out there is 7 weeks to go and suggested there are 'two seasons' left this year.. the finals and the build up. For those challenged by that concept, it means that while the Hawks look good now, anything could happen and there's a lot of time left for other contenders to try stuff and come good.

So... his ideas for Freo...

MacPharlin forward to help Pav.
Sandilands foward, to play, not resting.
Fyfe forward to CHF/HF flank
Test the mids to stand up without Fyfe adding C Pearce and Mzungu as replacements,

and Stephen Hill as HBF to set play up.

They all like Griff and to their credit, remembered him playing a sensational patch before injury.

Naturally, I lost sleep over this last night and turned here in my need for answers, for clarity and to admit that tonight, I may not leave the heater of high accidentally and expect to sleep a lot better. If that works, I might not start a stupid thread tomorrow morning. In the meantime though, here we are.

This whole suggestion, by the way, was aimed at how minor improvements could be made to challenge Hawthorn's speed of play and constant desire to go forward with the ball, not back.

In other words, find new ways to play like Freo played at the start of the season.

Did he open with a 15 minute explanation of who Fremantle are, for the two hosts?

Nah, they winged it.

See... they know Ross. They like Ross. Ross is funny, but scary. Ross can win this thing but he might need to make some changes, even though Ross doesn't like change.

I picked up that Gerard is now backing Richmond, looking forward to more fair and unbiased Victorian commentary..not.

I like all those suggestions except throwing McPharlin forward. He's the best full back in the country. Rance might get the ball more but I honestly can't remember McPharlin having more than two or three kicked on him and is virtually never beaten one on one. They've tried him forward before and it didn't work, not least because his kicking is pretty average.

The only reason you'd put McPharlin at full forward is if you'd worked out a way to get the full forward in a one on one contest with the defender, in an open forward line.

In which case you'd put Pavlich at full forward.

Whilst agreeing with most of what King Dingaling has said, I don't agree with his choice of replacement mids for Fyfe. I think now is the time to unleash an absolutely revved up Connor Blakely on the world, like he did at the end of 2013 with Lachie Neale. Blakely has the size, smarts and speed to replace Fyfe, we do not want to slow down mid-field. Bring on change and see how the other teams deal with it.

So really no insight at all. I'd like to see Roly handle him at a presser. Whats your name? You have been involved in football for how long? And thats the best you've got? How much do they pay you for that effort?

They make this crap up to make people think they've watched more than just the 2 minute highlights of each Freo game.

From what I saw, Hawthorn smashed Freo in Tassie, as quite evident from the stats, due to their inside 50s and their uncontested possessions. My opinion is, Hawthorn were so high in these stats, because of their numbers around the ball, their pressure and tackling and then once they have the ball in space, their skills and short kick football make it very hard to get the ball back. If you follow David King's proposals, which is basically to take your best players out of the midfield and defence and plonk them in your forward line, you only makes things worse.

Freo have been dominant at stoppages because they have one of (arguably the best) ruckman. They also have the best contested ball / clearance mid in Fyfe. Those things were both heavily negated by Hawthorn by getting massive numbers around the stoppages and scragging Freo players with impunity from the umpires. I struggle to recall Ross ever criticising umpires or making excuses, but in the last week or so, he has strongly questioned (in public) how Hawthorn were allowed to hang on to players and man the mark the way they do.

I believe you can only beat Hawthorn by beating them in the midfield. Once they have the ball, their elite skills (& 10-20m kicks) make it extremely difficult to stop them. One suggestion would be to have somebody knee Mitchell in the hip, then a corkie to both legs, at the first bounce. Taking Mitchell out of the game for the going MRP rate of $1500 would be a good start.
Gone to bigfooty where there's fewer Docker Haters.

Nick Suban could 'mistake' Mitchell's face for a bowling ball again (as he did in the '13 GF).

If David King wants Fyfe, Mcpharlin, Pavlich and Sandilands all in the forward line at the same time, he should at least coin a new phrase for those tactics.

Spot on Chewy. It clearly demonstrates why he's not coaching in the AFL.

What really peeved me about the segment was David King's lauding of how Hawthorn always bring the extra player in to shepherd the opponent on the mark to allow the Hawthorn player to run more than he otherwise could. I seem to recall this was against the rules and it frustrates me no end that Hawthorn appear to be the only team who are allowed to get away with it.

So can you block the player who is coming in to shepherd for the player with the free kick?
