TOPIC: Destination Clubs

I reckon we are travelling alright just at the minute given an issue that I think needs to be addressed. The current inequality that has arisen with free agency.
Take for example the hawks current premiership defending team.
Spangher, Lake, Gibson, Burgoyne, Gunston, McEvoy, Hale & Frawley. If you were to have a look at Sydney I think you would find a similar situation. Obviously not all the result of free agency and some good recruiting. It is easy to be critical of the current administration, but I am sure that they are having a crack at getting some quality across to play for us, but without paying overs are having little success.
I feel that this disadvantages us in negotiations as we have everything in place to be a destination club, but essentially we go to the table offering a fly in fly out position against a stay at home position on the same money.
Imagine how you feel as a supporter of one of the lower placed developing teams as your talent gets picked off for the same money you are offering.
I feel that maybe there needs to be a cap on how many free agents a club can recruit or similar. Interested to hear others thoughts.

Here is where I think several of your arguments fall over - Lance Franklin left Hawthorn to play in Sydney and Gary Ablett left Geelong to play on the Gold Coast.

Ablett went for overs and Franklin went to another destination club, and could also be argued overs in terms of contract length.

I think the main area you argument falls down is plenty of quality players are playing in those lower Vic clubs. The East is the preferred choice for the majority, the West is a destination club too far. The main reason they don't want to come here for more money is they know how much harder they have to work for it.

Unless you're Colin Sylvia, where you come and treat Freo as a Superannuation rort.

Freo were prepared to pay massive overs for crabs like Cloke and he only answered the phone calls to ramp up the counter offer from Eddie. Free agency has little do with it. The main inequity is the concessions and COLA that Sydney and the start ups have, to realise the impossible AFL goal of denting the NRL market. No other club could have afforded Franklin as soon as Sydney decided to pull out their chequebook.

Sydney gave Franklin a 9 year contract. That's what they had to do to get a deal done. We would have walked away and claimed he was being unreasonable. Then whinged that players won't come to WA, even players from WA.

Which came first, the 9 year contract or the $10m?

Is there anyone on here who'd choose FIFO if the same if not more cash was on offer to stay at home.
Thought not.

Except it's not FIFO and it's not for the same money. It's relocating and when you're poaching someone, you offer more money than they're already getting.

The piont here Shane is that Hawthorn are not offering more money. Even my Hawks supporting mates think that they may be getting some sort of advantage here. Don't think Collingwood or Geelong have had to pay over either. Lower placed clubs and interstate clubs may have too.

If James Frawley went to Hawthorn for less money then he needs to review his management.

Not less but the same, players want to go to successful clubs but not enough to move interstate and fly every fortnight. Why else can't we get one. Everything else says we have our club in order and should be a destination club. Hats off to Hawthorn for establishing themselves as that club, but before free agency they needed to trade for them now they incur no cost. Just think it is bit harder over here and for clubs to work their way up the ladder when their talent gets pilferred.

They paid him a big sack full of money that they had lying around after Sydney poached Franklin with a big sack full of money.

This destination club thing is just a myth made up to excuse poor execution in trade negotiations. We don't get anyone because we refuse to even contemplate paying and can't close a deal.

We offered plenty of money for Cloke with no result.

If we'd offered $10m to Buddy with a 9 year contract there would have been a stampede on Dockers HQ which would make the Running of the Bulls in Pamplona look like a CWA Devonshire Tea party by comparison.

The expansion clubs and the big, successful Melbourne clubs have a significant advantage in free agency. It does the complete opposite of what the AFL hoped it would achieve.

The only relevant point is whether or not he would have taken the $10 million and 9 year contract had Fremantle offered it to him. If Sydney have such an inherent advantage then why did they need to throw that contract at him. If Hawthorn have such an advantage then why couldn't they keep Franklin.
