Last time someone thought it would be a good idea to play Elvis forward, people still believed that Ben Cousins was sniffing because of the high pollen count.

I think it was a game against Richmond at the MCG in about 2005.

McPharlin played full forward for the second half. Snagged a couple.
Medhurst played on ball for the second half. Butchered it.

Freo were thrashed.

Playing players out of their best position is not the key to kicking more goals and winning games.

Players playing better in their best position is.

Basically, like a lot of teams Freo are setting up their attack from the backline and the backline is under pressure when you consider that as good as he is, the PearceA was about 5th in line at the start of the season.

Without gettin' all wiggy on who does what and when, taking the evil mastermind out of the backline now would be more reckless than Australian Crawl taking the Manly ferry back to Circle Quay.

Don't be that reckless.

I reckon until he gets physically bigger/stronger and more experienced, if t's not wet we play Taberner, if it is wet then bring in a highly skilled mid sized runner that can mark overhead and kick straight.....Blakely or Crozier? Time to let the young guns do their stuff

I'm not convinced that RoLy knows how to inject what is needed - playing Tabs doesn't make sense to me, yet nor does Hannath. We've kicked 167 goals after 14 rounds, only 35% of them (59) have come from 'tall forwards' or resting ruckman (i.e. Pav. Mayne, Sandi/Henrix/Hannath) - the 'big guys' aren't the blokes we're getting points from. In other words, 65% (118) have come from 'elsewhere' and/or Mikey/Ballas - the so-called 'ball handlers' (I think they've been called in the past).

Get more of them into the side and get the ball to them, we've got heaps of them in the magoos. Get Peel to step up their training and develop the big blokes down there.

Wouldn't Fyfe qualify for 'big guy' status?
;p

The counter argument might be that you need the big guys to bring the ball to ground for the midgets to do their work.
Whilst Taberner isn't taking too many grabs he's not afraid of a contest and maybe there is some benefit there.
If Ballas got front and square more often instead of sliding around headless chook style maybe we might see him hitting the scoreboard more often. Don't be giving me the carp about his forward pressure either - his tackle stats are not great.
Sonny however is a jet, creates his own chances and takes them.

That's a great stat Polly. I wonder if Fre_doh can get similar stats for the Eagles, Swans and Hawks. Why is it that both the Hawks and the Eagles are scoring at will. Clearly Simpson has used Clarkson's model but if it's about the midfield being where it's won or lost, and it was evident on Sunday, then it doesn't matter if you had 3 talls, they ain't gonna do *hit. So Fyfe and co are our problem not our fwd. line.

Jezza, I'm not sure where you're going with it, but the breakdown looks like this:

Goals kicked by tall forwards / ruckmen in 2015

Hawthorn: 34% (77 / 225)
Slime: 39% (88 / 224)
Sydney: 48% (87 / 180).

Overall in 2015:
The top 5 goalscorers are all talls.
7 of the top 10 are talls.
13 of the top 20 are talls.

The total number of small / medium forwards + midfielders + wandering halfbacks far outnumber the tall forwards + ruckmen on the field.

Interesting point about backlines setting up attacks. That is where Freo may need improvement. Our back line is made off "journeyman" type players that dont have elite speed or kicking Skills. Mc Pharlane has pace ( but slowed down at 33) , but you cant say he is an elite kicker, Ibbo ( reasonable speed) , but average kicker, Spurr ( full of guts) intercepts well but slow and average kicker ( at best), Michael Johnson ( solid speed) , good kicker , Duffield ( slow) but reasonable kicker. Clancee pearce ( medium speed) , good kicker but only on his right. The bottom line is if we are going to set up scoring from our backline and we want to compete with the elite scoring teams , we are going to need to get more elite kickers in our back line with speed to break lines. Putting Hill down there helps now and again but you need several , and then we lose him from the middle.

About eight years ago we had a gun full forward, Pav, and when the midfield got into strife we swung him in there. Today we have a gun mid, Fyfe, and when the forwards get into strife we swing him in there.
What does it all mean? Buggered if I know really but it seems to me we are short of a gun somebody somewhere.

What is this "bringing the ball to ground" thing that people speak of?

If it means dropping marks, well there's plenty of skill in this department already from the likes ofclarke, taberner, hannath, sandilands and even pavlich right now.

If you're relying on this to help you score goals via a bunch of less tall pack skirters, Freo should be kicking 18 goals per game, easily.

I reckon getting the ball to the ground in the forward line is the thing you need to avoid in order to kick more goals.
It doesn't matter if you are tall or short, forwards marking the thing inside 50 gives you the best chance of scoring. And it's easier for a forward to mark it inside 50 if
i. he is inside 50 to start with and
ii. the ball gets moved there quickly before the opposition (and for some reason a big bunch of your team mates - a coaching point gripe I'll save for another time) block up all the room.
