Be interested to read some of the fan theories as to how we might improve to get out of the "rut" we are in currently.

There's been a bit of finger pointing going around, but only a handful of genuine suggestions.

I personally think it's time to roll the dice a little and play Sandilands and Griff in the team together. Sandilands would probably take 55% of the ruck, spend 40% at full-forward and 5% on the bench. Griff would spend 45% time in the ruck, 50% at full-forward and 5% on bench.

With a ruckman at full-forward 90% of the time, we have a bail out kick option. Provided the ball is kicked properly, neither is probably going to get outmarked.

The second plan would be to open up the forward line. Have Pav starting just out of the goal square and only Ballantyne and Walters in the vicinity. It's been pointed out by Shane and others that Pav's not really out of form, he's just not getting the ball kicked to advantage all that often. Pav's strength is ability to win the one-on-ones.

I can't see how we can really improve the midfield or backline with the current crop available to us. It would be nice to be able to isolate Stephen Hill a bit more, but the good coaches just don't let it happen. Hill is a bit like our Cyril. His 15-20 touches are worth more than Barlow's 25-30.

While yesterday wasn't pretty, I'm not thinking it's doom and gloom from here. We got a severe audit yesterday. Better to happen in July than in October. If anything, the loss will prove to Ross and co that significant changes need to be made.

If you want to score more, you have to have outside runners more than three feet away from the ground pack scrambles.

And I want to see more running through the guts than high, slow kicks to packs around the boundaries where you waste your 40% more running advantage.

2015 has seen a concerted effort by Fremantle to tackle less. It hurt yesterday when against a team that needs pressure on the ball carrier to counter skilled ball movement, tackles were feeble at best. Surely DeBoer and Spurr aren't the only ones who can remember how to do it.

Quite simply. TIme to unleash the mongrel. The hard running one in each of them.

p.s. I'm not sure Z Clarke has one

I'm still of the view Sandi and Griff can't play in the same side DMan. Having a tall up there makes no difference if they are competing against 2 or 3 opposition players who after nullifying or winning the marking contest, then outnumber our ruckman on the ground. Hendrix is better on the ground than either of those two and wasn't able to do much against the Hawks despite trying pretty hard to get to contests. He's also better on the lead but we're obviously not capable of structuring up to get him in a position to lead or a midfielder able to get the time and space to attempt to hit one.

I'd like to see us man up those spare defenders and allow our midfield more space to work and get the footy clear of the contest as Sandi will dominate the hitouts and Fyfe, Manic and Neale should beat any pairing in the middle to feed Hill and Pearce. Playing 30 blokes 15m around ball ups with no forward structure is no way for us to kick a score.

Whether our spare players are around the contest or sitting back in defense, they are not doing much for our ability to score or win and we need to come up with a plan B when things are so clearly not working. Sitting back in the coaches box and allowing us to get smashed all day should alarm everyone.
Nathan: When did you get balls?
Simon: I've always had balls you've just never seen them.

I don't see why you can't play Griff and Sandi in the same side if you're playing Clarke and Sandi, with Clarke contributing nothing.

Clarke might be better at ground level, but he's not actually showing it. I think it's worth the roll of the dice for a couple of rounds, particularly against Carlton at home this week.

If Griff or Sandi mark it at FF, great. If they don't, we should have Ballantyne, Walters and possibly Mayne at the fall.

It's so easy to see where the problems are but the solutions are much less obvious.
Firstly, Sandi's tap's have become predictable to the opposition who now seem to be able to feed off them better than our players do. No idea why. Solution could be to bring in Griff and rest Sandi for a few games (don't like to place him in the forward line as his marking has been questionable of late).
Abblett went through what Fyfe is going through every week. Geelong's solution was to free up another player to try to take out the tagger at stoppages, so Abblett had more room. Perhaps we could try that for Fyfe... use Suban or C Pearce? Hopefully something will get sorted here before Fyfe blows a gasket...
Stop the long bombs into the forward 50. It doesn't work. It's predictable again. We do it ALL the time.
No idea what the solution is here but we need some set plays to move it up with short low kicks.
Pav needs more space to lead into. Watch what Pies do for Cloke or GWS do for Cameron or (this hurts) what the Slime do for Kennedy.
Our defence is doing damn well considering they are under constant pressure!
As I said it's easy to see the problems...

I'm not saying Hendrix is contributing much atm, I'm saying I don't think any of our ruckman will contribute anything under the conditions he faced yesterday but Hendrix is the best chance. Last week he took 5 grabs in the wet despite he poor way we played and structured up and is averaging just under 5 marks a game for the season. That's pretty good for a bloke getting double and triple teamed most weeks. More importantly in our present make up, he is a better chance of contributing when the ball hits the ground.

The other point I'd like to make is we never play a full forward, our closest player to goal outside of a centre bounce is generally in the centre square at best if not their half of the ground. Hendrix is gonna get around the ground a lot better than Griff or Hannath for that matter and get to more contests. I don't think Griff would make us a better side atm or the addition of any players really when our structures are not working at all. It doesn't really matter who plays where when we can't deliver the ball forward properly.

It's pretty clear that Freo is also a victim of its own success this season. Opposition coaches have put a fair bit of thought into how to contain us and it's working.

Losing MJ has hurt us, but every club is missing key personnel so it can't really be an excuse. I really don't see our issues being down back. They are mostly to do with the connection to the half-forward line.

Alex Pearce was clearly our BOG against the Hawks and has rarely been beaten since entering the side which has been fantastic to watch. Ibbo struggled a bit more but generally has been great for us all season so i don't think we've missed MJ too much in terms of stopping the opposition. It has made a difference to how we rebound and run out of defence, transitioning to attack.

Without MJ we don't appear to have the precision or creativity moving the ball forward we once did and it shows. A lot of RL's game plan involves pressuring the opposition into turning the footy over when going forward and then hurting them on the rebound only we don't have the proper structures forward to make it count and MJ can't cover up some of those flaws with intelligent movement and disposal.

I have waited 5 years for Clarke to become an afl footballer and I think it is time to cut our losses. There is a reason he is quietly put up for trade every year. To me there is nothing to lose by playing Griffin as the second ruckman. It is that long since I have seen him play I cant remember what his marking is like but a dual pronged full forward of Griff and Pav may work, especially if they can manage to lead away from each other and create space for the small forwards to work. Who those small forwards are is also up for debate. Ballantyne is horribly out of form and unfortunately Mayne hasn't cut it for quite a while now. As others have said, 'pressure acts' shouldn't be enough to command a spot in the team and both should be dropped. I also think they could do worse than play someone like Clancee as a half forward flank and see if he can sneak away enough to nab a couple of goals a game. His accuracy is very good and from what I can remember he kicked quite a few goals in his first season or two under Harvey. I would also give Blakely and Weller a few games and if they perform it allows us to try Fyfe as possibly chf against the weaker teams. Good young players help revitalise teams and Lyon has shown too much faith with a few players.

I also don't really like the selection messages that Lyon sends each week. Certain players seem to be able to underperform each week and still get picked, while others get to come on as the sub for a quarter and if they don't get 15 touches they are dropped. And how guys like Mayne and Clarke get a game ahead of Muzungu makes no sense to me at all. We have also continually picked tall teams for wet games and it has hurt us. I realise the cupboard is bare as far as quality big men goes but I feel like in the last 6 weeks our ladder position has hidden a multitude of sins and that we are still a long way away from that elusive first flag.

hmmm, I reckon I'd be tapering the training load so that players are peaking towards August and September and taking a punt of sorts, an educated punt, an enlightened torp if you will, on a slump in performance and form in the middle of the year.

Correction, Bizkit: A lot of RL's game plan used to involve pressuring the opposition into turning the footy over when going forward and then hurting them on the rebound.

Lack of forward pressure is one of the major differences between this year and 2013/2014. In fact, lack of pressure generally.

The other big difference is spread of goal kickers, especially contributions from midfielders. In 2013 we'd routinely have 9, 10, 11 or more goal kickers. Since the Adelaide game we've only managed 7 at best. Seems to be more emphasis on deep entries (aka the long bomb) from the wing than on the centring short pass and second short pass for a shallow entry right in front.

No idea whether these changes have to do with the constantly evolving nature of the game, or with something more banal like a form slump.

Biz sort of has it right, but the problem is the halfback line. Tossing Hill/2nd Pearce back there on Sunday cost us dearly - we needed that outside run further up.

Bring Connor in for Sheridan to move the ball across the midfield to the forward half - Crozier (likewise) on the other wing (but wider); flood Hill (who was our best) and Pearce on one side of the ground; play Fyfe chf more often.

With all this talk of Sandi, Griff & Clarke there is one thing to take into account and that is that Griff is actually regularly kicking goals at the moment, which is a lot better than what we're getting at present from anyone else.
