TOPIC: Core Purpose

Geelong have approached the AFL Commission for financial relief with the club revealing it will lose close to half a million dollars this season.

Cook said that membership downturn alone has seen a budget shortfall of about $500,000. Added to which Geelong's attendances are down this season and gaming profits have also significantly fallen.

"Our lack of investment into that area has probably helped cause that because our core purpose is football and our capital spend has gone into footy," said Cook.

It's probably time for some of these clubs to drop the romanticised view of what they do and realise they're in the business of selling tickets.

Times are tough when you can't make good money from pokies in Geelong.
My memory is dodgy but I do seem to recall Cooky banging on about reducing their reliance on the pokies and looking to develop alternative revenue streams. The stadium upgrade etc was to add to the footy experience. Obviously that's not working too well.

Looks like there will be a few finals in Geebung this year.

Easiest way for the AFL to prop them up without actually doing anything.

That's if they even make 8

WAFC should book a rugby game in perth on the first weekend of the finals. That way freo finishing higher get first choice, send west coast to geelong for their 'home' final.

problem solved

If they want bigger crowds at their home game, tell the twit who tweets this stuff to rein it in a bit:

Serves them right for letting Freo play at The Cattery.

Geebungers had 14 wins in a row there ... Freo fixed that up in the Final. Then they recovered and had another 7 wins there ... and along came Freo to fix that up.
Now even teams like Norths and the Demons aren't concerned about a visit to the pussery.

And no surprises, they are now having trouble putting bums (pardon the pun for Geelong supporters) on seats.

Hopefully they don't read my post ... They might get ideas of suing FFC for loss of revenue.
Gone to bigfooty where there's fewer Docker Haters.

Just to be a little fair, Geelong (the City and greater area) has been slaughtered in terms of local employment, with large industries (manufactoring in particular) shedding employees in huge numbers over the last three years - this region has lost more employment than any other in Aust over the past few years at alarming levels.

It is no surprise that the locals can no longer afford to attend the footy or donate money to the club via gaming machines.

I think it is important that the AFL recognise that every now and then regions will face unique and unplanned circumstances and should be ready to assist financially in the short term, if only to ensure that the short term pain does not translate into long term recovery.

They should have seen it coming. Expectations at Geelong are high after such a good period and form was eventually going to struggle to meet them, memberships are at top dollar after years of milking supporters and their economy has always been susceptible to big downturns.

The worry is that Fremantle are going down the exact same path and the alarm bells should be ringing. They're milking members for more and more money to pay for unsustainable football department spending (top spenders again this year) and a point will come when form turns and people decide they no longer see value in a membership.

We're spending more each year than anyone else, taking on a major spend on new facilities and relying more on members pockets to pay the bills than anyone else.

Disagree with you Shane on your last comment.

Both WA teams have a huge advantage when it comes to sponsorships and supporters - compared to Vics with 10 clubs. Freo are also in the Black even through they have spent more to get where they are today on the ladder...

Besides its likely the spend on admin will drop due to the AFL Tax on admin spending (cap $9.3M).

To date the club are doing well on and off the field... Only a blinked Victorian would not understand that!!

Fremantle were listed last on the sponsorship ladder published the other week.

They're also one of the three teams in line to be taxed for going over the cap this year. West Coast and Hawthorn are the other two.
