The really stupid thing is if Bennell had failed a dope test, he would have got a strike and it would have been kept private. Right now he's hasn't failed a dope test and he gets bashed up by the Hun.

The current 3 strikes policy is a fraud. An utter fraud. If you fail a dope test for coke or similar, the club needs to be notified so they can put things in place. Thats if the AFL is actually serious about player welfare and not just hide the behaviour until it can't be ignored any more. The club is in the best position to monitor and mentor a player.

Having mindless cretins drag their faces across the front page to act as a diversion for somebody else doesn't serve the player welfare or the game any good. Bennell stuffed up. He's not the first and won't be the last but he needs a sage head around him showing him the way forward and not being hung out to dry. If the cops aren't involved, and they're not, then its a management issue for his club.

Frankly, I'd have him at Freo and maybe first Johnno can mentor him on to the straight and narrow. As for Robbo, well maybe he should look at himself in the mirror and take stock but that might be a little painful for him

I tell you one thing. The next time a conservative politician stands up and says drugs are the modern day evil of our society and we need to protect our children from them by declaring war , I will nod in agreement. And that would be a first for me.

I really think we have a massive problem and as a dad of two teenage sons I am deeply worried about something I have never really worried about before.

Wars on drugs are hollow political cliches, to make people think they can actually achieve anything, and garner votes.

The only thing you can meaningfully do is be open with your kids on how to deal with the issue. The decisions are theirs to make, and they need to be aware of the company they keep that might negatively influence them. No one forces kids to take drugs.

I'm no expert on kids and drugs. But I've got some ideas. Firstly don't lie to them. Tell them that "insert currently trendy drug here" is the most dangerous drug ever, and they know you are lying. Even if its true. Tell them about your drug use. Don't gloss it. If there is stuff you regret, tell them. If there is stuff that was fun, tell them.

I'm not very adventurous with drugs, but I know people who have used dope, ecstasy, speed, heroin, and lots of alcohol. None of the ones I know have suffered much as a result. But my family has a tendency towards psychosis - so I tell my son that he might think twice about smoking dope - the consequences might not be pretty.

Drug dealers exist to meet demand - market forces on display. Eliminate demand and we've won "the war". Of course that will never happen while we have risk-taking kids, which is normal behaviour so we need another approach to this other than the totally failed strategies we have had for the last 75 years i.e. "tough on crime/drug dealers".

Unfortunately there is so much money involved when "recreational" drugs are illegal, greed will ensure that we'll never stamp out the supply side.

I'm not sure there is a solution to the demand side other than education but we have to try something different.
