TOPIC: Forward Line

If it makes you feel any better, the coach agrees with you:

Lyon said he was particularly frustrated by skills errors entering the forward 50.

"We had some shocking turnovers early when we had opportunities to go to one-on-ones inside forward 50," he said.

Thank god for Sonny and the midfield last night. Pav hasn't kicked a goal in three or four? games now, Ballas has only kicked nine for the season and I doubt Mayne has kicked too many either. Plus nothing from Crozier last night and there's four of your forwards not hitting the scoreboard(Ballas kicked one last night).
Who's kicking goals at Peel? Anyone go to the games and see anyone of interest that could be worth a go in the forward line?

Collingwood didn't seem to have trouble marking the ball. Especially in the forward 50. I guess the umps must have dried it off for them?

Twice I saw Mayne look to dish it off when he could've (and was well within his rights as a forward) just had a shot. I honestly think he's too unselfish. He does 99% of his stuff well but I've seen it a few games this year and last that he doesn't take the shot when it's on offer as much as a forward should. That'd turn him into an A-grade forward methinks.

Dewy games are hard for tall forwards. Anyone who's played in Victorian countryside or up in the Adelaide Hills (I've done both) will tell you that. It's a good time for small forwards and the wingers to have a decent game. If you get a half decent full back they'll usually do well knowing that the pressure will mostly be enough unless the forward has buckets for hands. Full credit to AA Luke and N.Brown on their respective roles, they played the conditions. As did Walters, Ballas and such.

FWIW I'd rather see a forward line of
FF: Walters: Pav Mayne
HF: *** Clarke Ballas

*** Could basically be anyone of Deboer/Suban/Crozier/D.Pearce/Hill/Zu etc.

Completely agree Onwano, including with your proposed forward line.

I really like the look of Crozier, and he was one of the few to take a couple of marks above his head last night. I also thought he was pretty clean in the game against GC17. I was a little surprised when he was subbed out, but it seemed a bit like a team balance decision. I think Crozier is more likely to score goals from general play than de Boer, but how much fun is it watching Mayne, Ballas and de Boer all harassing in the forward line again! Maybe the club has some advanced stats about the ratio of goals created from general play v pressure acts, but otherwise I’m not sure how to split them.

I just want a dry ground and a warm day.

Which probably what the game plan is designed for. I can't say exactly what but there seems to be a fair bit of new stuff being tried out which didn't always work out. I'd like to be a fly on the wall at the post game analysis discussion. Provided Walters isn't handed a fly swat.

Our chances of winning GF with our current forward line is far less than with someone else beside Pav who can take a grab.

Interesting to note that Ross Lyon stated on fox footy after the game last night whilst chatting with King, that griffin may come into the side in the near future so Sandi can play a game or two in the forward line. Also said there were a few other changes in the mix before finals approach.

I'm hearing on DockerLand and virtually everywhere else that Freo's forward line is a concern.
Why? Last night we had a better i50 to goal conversion than Collingwood did. So, if Freo's forward line is so bad, Collingwood must have huge problems given 3 of Freos best defenders weren't on the field.

I thought it was pretty obvious that the problem last night was our slippery ball fumbling in the midfield ... again. We won the hit outs, won the clearances, but still only had 43 i50s. Your forwards are not going to kick 15+ goals with 43 inside 50s, with a slippery ball, against a good team putting pressure on you. 12 goals for 43 i50s is good.

Freo's previous game's goal to i50s conversion (in the wet) was terrible (6 goals from 53 i50s), so this week it seemed Roly wanted them to get the ball inside 50, front of goals, make the opposition defenders nervous, and give the small forwards a chance. 11 of Freo's 12 goals came from this sort of play.

But if it's easier for you to think we just need another key forward, then you can dream of what could have been last night if we had Cloke.
Gone to bigfooty where there's fewer Docker Haters.

We wouldn't be having any forward trouble if Sylvia was still in the side...
