www.afl.com.au/news/1452108/2026-fixture...huge-start-to-season

"The 2026 Toyota AFL Premiership season fixture was officially released on Thursday, with Carlton also faring surprisingly well, joining the Western Bulldogs with seven games in the marquee timeslots."

Who would have thunk it, hey? What awesome teams to watch on repeat week-in-week-out on Thursday and Friday nights.

In that article promoting how good the start of the season is going to be, three teams are not even mentioned. Richmond, GWS and guess who else...

As for the actual fixture and getting some promotional broadcast exposure. Friday night games Freo do play - in Melbourne V Footscray doubles-up with the Adelaide showdown and in Perth V St Kilda for Sir Doug Nichols doubles-up with Essendon V Richmond Dreamtime at the G.

Irrelevant as always.

I haven't looked at all the teams, but I am happy that the double up games are spread across the season, I generally dislike it when teams play the double up within a few rounds of each other, it can definitely be an advantage if the opposing team is going through a poor form/injury patch. Now we're only fighting to get to the top 10, having an 8 point advantage could really help your chances of playing finals.

A little disappointed but not surprised.
5th year In a row no home game round 1 - 2 weeks into season before a home game.
No games for three weekends during gather round then away Derby! (Membership is becom8ng a joke when watching at home half the time.) Don't feel part of the AFL when 3 weeks you don't go to the footy.
Then, with the Bunbury game, two away games then a bye. Three weeks again, for most members.
Pretty poor treatment in my opinion.
Floating fixtures, again! 9 games with no idea. Too bad for those who have to book leave in advance.
Last game away, again!
So, basically our home and away season 3 weeks less than the actual season. Don't get to attend the footy until 2 weeks in and last game, jump on a plane.
As I said, disappointed but not surprised.
Wonder how many other teams have 3 weekends with no footy! Doubt there's many, probably only non VFL teams.
Guess we will have to show them we can win regardless of their disgraceful fixtures. Good luck Freo.

Straddo,
double up games meaining they are on at the same time as other games - on Friday nights, with the other games being significant events that will attract most broadcast eyes and ears.

Bet the sponsors are thrilled with this.

Talk about under the radar. Perhaps if we wear the stealth jumper they won't even realise we played. We could get to the top-half-and-a-bit play-offs and folk all over the country look at the ladder with Freo on top and suddely gasp, "what the funk? who are they and when did this happen?"

The two main measures I look for in a good fixture are which sides you play 2 games against and how many 6 or less day breaks you have to recover (even worse if they're away games where you're straight on a plane after the game).

We play Geelong, Adelaide, Western Bulldogs, Carlton, Melbourne and West Coast twice which is far better than the past couple of years. Geelong are obviously the toughest double up but we often match up well against them and there's every chance some of their old stagers begin to fall apart. Adelaide far exceeded expectations this year and I don't rate their midfield. We get to play them over there with Gather round roped in but off a 6-day break which will be tougher, at least we'll be at home before it so an easier recovery. We also get 3 games at Adelaide oval so we'll have plenty of opportunity to acclimatise to it, along with it being the shortest interstate trip possible for us, a massive boost opposed to playing games in Tassie, GC, Brisbane, NT etc.

The Dogs are always hit or miss while I expect Carlton and Melbourne to be significantly worse this year as their aging teams struggle to cover the players lost in the trade period. Then there's the OOFTIT's who are trash and we should pick up easy wins against. Overall, 3 of those double ups are very favourable while the other 3 aren't as bad as I would expect.

Five 6-day breaks are probably less than we'd normally have and most tend to be after a hgome game which will offer far more early recovery for the players. The biggest issue I see with the fixtures is an unusually high number of Thursday and Friday night games (6) with 8 total night games in those fixtures which we haven't traditionally played well in. Having the opportunity to experience it more will be a massive boost to the side and hopefully having them fire in those night timeslots more often. It's not a bad fixture at all.
Nathan: When did you get balls?
Simon: I've always had balls you've just never seen them.
Nathan: That's the gayest thing I've ever heard.

At least we got the Len Hall Game to be played on ANZAC Day in the evening at OPTUS. Should be a good night against Carlton in a very winnable game.

Of couse every game can be won or lost, but I can only see 3 games that Freo probably won't be the favourite: R1 Geelong, R8 WB and R12 Brisbane.

If Freo are a genuine top 4 side, they should be beating chumps like Carlton twice, win their away games against Adelaide, GWS & Melbourne, beat Collingwood in Gather Round and win all of their home games.

The season always starts full of hope, but I feel we have a genuine chance to get 2 home finals next year. After a R1 loss, I can see Freo winning the next 6 games in a row to set up its season.

I don’t think a Rd 1 loss in inevitable. The Dockers have (sometimes) played Geelong’s cow paddock of a ground really well in the past and I personally don’t think Chris Scott can magic up another season like the last for a while. Their 2025 fixture list was too easy.
