TOPIC: Father/Son policy

I believe that the Father/Son Selection policy is archaic and an overhang from a bygone era. For all the people that believe that there should be room for sentimental attachment of surnames to certain clubs based on the Father/Son rule, I say: baloney. It completely runs against the competition equalisation mantra that the AFL supposely operates to. Back to Back premierships to Brisbane based on consecutive Ashcrofts and Fletcher. That can't be allowed to happen.

It's time to go.

Father/sons are fine and I would never want to see Pav's kids or Mundy's kids playing in another jumper let alone the OOFTIT's.

The problem has been paying a fair price for them along with NGA's and academy kids who have been swooped up for late picks that were effectively worthless. Sides will have to pay more to get up the order and match a bid this season but it isn't enough. Next year will be even more harsh with what picks will be needed to match a big and looks to be more in line with what a club should pay.

Too little too late for anyone wanting to compete with Brisbane or the Northern academies.

I think there was a still a spot for father/son in the modern era, the problem is we just haven’t had the calibre other clubs have.

The AWFL will try to even up the point system but will butcher it like everything else they touch… don’t get me started on rookie lists that can allow a 200 + game player to be delisted and then rookied by the same club.

Whenever AFL have meddled with the Father Son, in fact any area, it has eventually ended in tears.

Never forget. The AFL is famously good at picking losers.
The role of AFL is NOT to support Clubs. It is to provide the environment for Clubs to support themselves.

They're doing a pretty good job of supporting the slime by giving them extra draft picks they don't deserve.

or deserve. Absolutely, Corporal! One of, if not the biggest crocs to come out of the afl house sewage system recently. Or ever!

Father-Son, however, is one of the few things in sport player management and structure in the entire world that does not have commoditising as its founding principle. And I like this. Paying an appropriate contribution to allow the romance is definitely required, yes. Pay up to the hilt for it, but the foundation is not the paying but the maintaining connection and family association which is unique and something to be treasured.

Okay, so I am going to admit that I haven't thought this through at all...

It seems the Father/Son rule can, on occasion, give a club an exceedingly talented player at a dirt cheap Draft price. Could the AFL penalise a club in later years if it becomes apparent that they got a huge advantage from the Father/Son draft?

For example, the Ashcrofts may cost Brisbane their first and second round picks from the 2026 and 2027 Drafts.

I love the father/son rule and would love for all our players' progeny to play in the Purple if they're good enough but what bugs me about all the whingeing is that anyone not happy with the situation should just continue to put in bids for these kids and make the clubs use up their draft picks to match these bids as Eagles are contemplating doing with Harry Dean. If you really think he's a gun then bid for him at 1 or 2 and run the risk that you may get stuck with him if Carlton don't use up picks to match your bid. If not then just stop the whingeing. I'm pretty certain that the Weagles are just assuming that they will get Charlie Banfield for nothing as a Rookie list player but if we decided that he might be worth a spot on our list, as I do after seeing him run rings around our NGA kids Toby Whan and Ryda Luke in the Colts Grand Final, then we can put a bid in for him and force the Weagles to use a Draft pick to match. I'm sure we wouldn't be complaining if we were gifted a shot at Lucas Robinson in next year's draft or if Sean McManus' kid was a gun this year or if Sonny Walters' girls wanted to run out in the Purple

Whether Freo does or doesn't benefit from the rule has nothing to do with my opposition to it. It’s just wrong in principle - the AFL’s version of a hereditary monarchy.

Just for reference, Whan injured his shoulder 10min into the Colts GF and didn't play the rest of the game which was probably the main reason Souths struggled through the midfield. Whan had proven a superior player to Banfield throughout the year and was handed accolades accordingly.

There's unlikely to be a bid on Banfield just like Whan and both will go to their aligned clubs without any fuss.

The main one's needing bids are the academy players like Uwland, Patterson and Annables who should all be bid on in the OOFTIT's first 2 picks.
