4 goals to 2 - was it AFLW or soccer?

Yes Davo, AFLW can be a very tough watch. Is there another sport where the difference in quailty of the men’s and women’s game is so stark? Hopefully the gap will narrow as the women continue to get more professional opportunities.

AFLW goes for half the time as an AFL game, 17min with no time on per quarter. It's not comparable at all with the men's scoring.
Nathan: When did you get balls?
Simon: I've always had balls you've just never seen them.
Nathan: That's the gayest thing I've ever heard.

also, given it is in its infancy, you probably need to compare it to the VFA games of the late 19th century to be honest

Disappointing result. Crows really have got our number. We're 1-9 against them now. They are of course stacked with talent and it's surprise to see them so low on the ladder.
Still, a good year from the Dockers after the start they had. They had very little assistance from the new players. Georgie Brisbane perhaps an exception, but she still a work in progress. Tilly Banfield showed a fair bit yesterday, but she's undersized. We really missed Tighe!
The one thing that I noticed is that our stoppage work has improved out of sight. With McCarthy, Bowers/East, Newton and Strom we have dominated. They are well positioned and slick with the ball to get it outside. Of course, we have lots of other areas we struggle, so it only goes so far.
The rebuild is progressing, but we're still a couple of years from challenging.

Realistically, the Freo side is amongst those top 6 teams but with the inequities of an 18 team competition and playing 10 rounds, it was always going to be tough. We were mostly fixtured against the other top teams like North and Brisbane considering our higher finish last season while low sides from last season played other sides in the same area of the ladder who were no good.

As a result, our draw was incredibly tough and it showed. No side is anywhere near North and there's another big gap between Brisbane and any other side. Everyone else is just an also-ran to be honest which is unfortunate for the competitiveness of the competition. Allowing a side or two to be so dominant isn't in the best interests of the competition and neither is the 10 rounds before finals but that's the way it goes at the moment.

The Freo girls were carried by their older stars with a big drop off to the next level of player and a severe lack of youth considering the OOFTIT's have had a monopoly on the draft since their inception. I hope the older stars can hang around for a few years yet as they will need to keep the side afloat when we do eventually go looking for more talent at the draft.

We seriously need more goal kickers. Miller is inconsistent and Tighe is injury prone .

I wouldn't be surprised to see Tighe retire. She's had a terrible run with both knees now having two ACL injuries.

Yes, Miller is inaccurate, but very dynamic, so created a lot of opportunities along the way. But, we certainly are starved of forward power. Brisbane is still raw and immobile, Kikoak has limited impact and Gaba, while great entertainment value, isn't skilled enough to do much damage. This is where we fell down yesterday.

I agree jezzargh, I'll tune in around 2125 when the standard improves to a professional level. In 10 years of AFLW, the standard has improved from U13 Boys to about U15 Boys level in terms of size, skills and strength.

I can't fault the effort, but whenever I watch it, all I see are dropped marks, dumb decision making and poor disposal. They make Matt Taberner look like Tony Lockett.

Hawthorn "kicked" 0.3 for an entire game. Even if the game goes for a shorter time, you expect to see more goals than that, otherwise you're just watching junior footy.

Perhaps not 2125, but in 20 years hopefully the standard will have improved when girls have played it since birth, and not by using imported players from other sports. There's probably only one or two players in every AFLW team that I would consider a real footy player, e.g. Turbo for the Dockers or Roberts for the Slime.

Soccer is fairly boring, but if you compare women to men, the standards are comparable. But it's probably because no one scores anything!
