Anyone else watching Luke Jackson snatch that mark out of a pack of Saints with 15 seconds to go, with a combination of sheer determination, fingertips of glue, and an ability to extend his arms out their sockets, reminded of JLo in very similar circumstances back in 2005? Wonder if JLo was similarly triggered.

Add it to Sirengate, that match when the Dockers only managed one goal against them (was that in 2007?) and all the numerology currently floating around about win/loss ratios and there is something mythic about Freo and the Aints.

Certainly something mythic happening with Marshall's on the full goal from the ruck, too. I thought we were done when I saw that happen. No way we could fight both the Saints and the footy gods.

Bellfor, that vision plainly showed all that is so wrong in RL's tactics against Freo. The Saint had no eyes for the ball, scragged, and still no move by the umps to blow the whistle.

A great game and Jordan Clark amber of our guys was wonderful to watch. He reads the play so well and a great user of the ball. Treacy also was inspirational, real leadership shown by him and a few good years ahead watching these young guys keep improving.

On Ross Lyon, it's a game of Aussie rules football, Ive never seen a game where there wasn't scragging. To recognise our on-ballers needed an extra two saints to nullify our effectiveness to clear the ball was pure Ross Lyon tactical brilliance. We only beat them by two goals, at home with a far moire talented team. Great to win but let's give it some perspective.

We have the lowest percentage in the top eight and by a significant margin from six of those sides, that tells us really where we're at. We're in the eight but need o be able to put sides away convincingly and when the opportunity presents.

Noddy, although I agree with your sentiment. I think you are missing some nuances of the draw and the only example I wish to offer up is North Melbourne.

The Roos played very well against us, and the eGulls. What they dished up to Hawthorn, though, was awful. I would have liked to have played them when they were awful.

Since we have hit our straps, after the inglorious start to the year, we've played well. We haven't demolished sides but I'd argue that the teams we played would not have been demolished by any other club at that point in time.

Happy to be argued against.

Good wins against GCS & GWS no doubt, and we did beat the Crows at home.

But we haven't beaten C'wood, Brisbane or Hawthorn yet, so the team probably deserves to be where it is - 6th.

Still a long way to go to get to the top but happy to see the improvement, especially with new players like Reid & Dudley, and stars like Jackson & Bolton.

We're now winning close games instead of losing them. Onwards and upwards.

Tactical brilliance does not reduce the most watchable and exciting sport in the world to constant and continual slog-fests.

It is a tactic. Yes. It may win some, even a majority of games. Yes, though unlikely with a bit of creative opposition thought. But brilliant it is not.

Agree, Mushy, pure tactical cheating. The brilliance was from JL, sticking to his game plan and outslogging a not fit enough RL team.

I dont know why we were so bad out the centre, but if we broke even with them we would have won by six goals.

Hypen, have a read of this great analysis of what happened after 3/4 time and then compare it to the wishy washy lame Laidley piece in the Worst.

edit Here's the Laidley column

From both columns seems like Serong and Bradshaw are coaching on the field. In Gridiron its quarterback audibles to change clearance patterns on the fly. If this is what is occurring it’s great. My issue with JL has been we are too overcoached and rigid if the leadership team can make calls on the fly this makes us more proactive which is a good thing.

Why can’t we get analysis like this on the tv? I really do think the coverage of the afl is shocking at times. We have a whole channel on fox footy and yet you get 5min snippets on your team, mostly just superficial analysis, or saying a player is good. I read the Athletic for my NHL coverage, multiple stories every week on the Maple Leafs, stats, video, game reviews.

Ahh Roodawg, it seems only fitting that you support Freo if you're a Maple Leaf fan. They won their last championship in 1967. Their 48-season drought between championships is currently the longest in the NHL.
