TOPIC: Goal or no goal

I totally love this game of ours.
Every year they tweek it a bit and I get used to the changes, accept that they are doing their best to ‘improve’ it.

However one rule that constantly irks me is the ball touching the post on the way through the big sticks being called a point.
The posts are padded to the hilt at the bottom a taper off towards the top. So what would be a goal further up would be a point if kicked lower. Makes no sense!
I really feel that if the ball isn’t touched by a player, it should be a goal, which is why it’s a rule in soccer, rugby, hockey etc.

Rant over. Thank you for reading : D

Naah, the rule has always been, " The ball must pass between the goalposts without touching either post." Why change it, all players, coaches and spectators know the rule, it is a simple rule, and we would then have the argument shiftes to "If the ball hits any part of the goal post it should be a goal. There is 7 metres (give or take) for the ball to go through.

Once they’ve got rid of the sub rule, the AFL can turn their attention to this.

Yeah, I agree FD...just because a rule has "always been" doesn't mean it can't or shouldn't be changed. The AFL seems to change (or "improve") rules each season. All this one needs is to remove "without touching the post".
Apart from allowing the game to flow quicker due to no more lengthy pauses while the decision is made whether the ball touched the post, players would not need to wait to find out if they were going back for a bounce or setting up for a kickout.
But most crucially, some of the decisions are so difficult to adjudicate that inevitably errors are made, and this means either plus or minus 5 points for each side. Which of course can mean a win or a loss that shouldn't have happened.

Couldn't agree more. Just award a goal or a behind if it nicks the post.

Why do people always want to change the game? Just because some other sport has XYZ rule, doesn't mean we should also do the same.
It's called Australian Rules, it's unique and it's our game. Just leave the bloody game alone.

What do you do if the ball goes over the post? how do you judge whether it would have gone through for a goal or not?

Ruling against a goal because it grazed the post is just an objectively dumb rule. If you removed it you’d get fewer reviews and more goals. I don’t see who loses out of that.

Can we go to town and say that if the ball bounces off any post back into the field of play it is "play on"?
