We all know things can change in an instant, but I’m feeling optimistic about Freo’s prospects this season. We’ve got great talent across every line, a young core entering their prime, a forward line that on paper has heaps of goals in it, and a fixture that includes an extra home game and a Gather Round game against last-year’s wooden spooners. We’ve also got a head coach with four seasons under his belt, who should also be hitting his straps as a coach.

There’s plenty of variables - injuries, the occasional crucial umpiring howler, an uneven fixture – but I feel like so much is in Freo’s hands this season.

Other than those things above, I reckon much of the season comes down to a few things:

Our Approach: I feel like the last couple of years too often we played not to lose, like we carried the weight of every potential loss as a death-knell for the season. We’ve got one of the best lists, so over 23 games we should win more than we lose. I feel like for the last few years we’ve lost 50% of the games when we’re holding a small lead in the last quarter. If we’re up by 2 goals with 10 minutes to play, we should aim to win by 4 goals (and keep the slowdown stuff for the last 2 minutes).

Darcy’s knee/ankle/head/etc.: We smashed teams in the clearances last year, and that’s in big part because of Darcy, even though he wasn’t at his best. More than that, the drop off between him and Jackson/Reidy in the ruck is so pronounced, that I think our team is much worse when he doesn’t play (there’s no Johnno playing underneath Sandi). Even an 80% fit Darcy for most of the season helps us enormously.

Forward Line Chemistry: Treacy, Amiss, Jackson, Bolton. Whoa boy is there some firepower. Add the right mix of complimentary players like Switta, Freddy, O’Meara, Reid, Sturt, Banfield (and hopefully Walters is a starring cameo here and there) and that’s an elite forward line. Chemistry might even be overstating what we need. We need to get it in quick to these guys, and I reckon they are all smart and talented enough to know how to get on the end of a kick. The chemistry bit will actually be the boring logistics of organising them on the field so they aren’t all in the exact same spot all the time. Coaching aside, I think the players are smart enough to work that out.

I’m excited.

I’m excited.

My only concern is I think our players are overcoached. They haven’t played on instinct

If JLo can let them have their head of steam we can go far.

I’m not sure hinging success around one ruckman being available is a healthy thing. This team needs to be coached as winners. When Darcy’s in we’re a better team but surely we can’t rely on him to get us across the line.

Players know when they’re surrounded by other players of the calibre required to be successful, I think our guys are sensing that we have the group to be in the mix for finals.

Those over at the Mongrel are equally as excited.

Good read.

I agree. We are looking good this season. Once upon a time our opponents could shut down our stars and there was nobody else to stand up. But we have enough young players who are ready to step up and handle the responsibility. So if, for example, Clarke gets tagged, I expect Chapman, Draper, or Walker to drive the ball out of defence.

And please, can we focus on winning, rather than not losing?

To go deep this year I think we need a couple of players to surprise and delight us beyond expectations.

My candidates are Jye Amiss and Murphy Reid. I’ve got a really good feeling about both.

And JLo needs a big year too - I want him to be the one. He’s a cautious bloke by nature, but he needs to set the team up to play with the right combination of freedom and discipline.

Not on football but I got a new set of Lawn Bowls towards the end of last year - Dockers colours of course, And I just won the local club championship. Last few years I always bombed out in the very early rounds - but this year with my new bowls - Hey Presto it is all coming up roses.

Go Dockers.

One of the big differences for me this season is how we look with injuries. If you told me in previous years that we'd be missing effectively our best clearance players in Darcy and Young (as well as Fyfe), my expectations would be far lower. However, even without those players our line up still looks strong and competitive against anyone. That young depth is starting to mature and prove themselves in their own right.

We're missing our skipper Pearce? Nevermind. Cox, Draper and even Davies can play a role and excel. Missing Young? Johnson, Noddy, Ras and Bruce will step up to fill the void. That depth is what you need to go deep into the year and maintain a high level of form throughout the season. We now have it.
Nathan: When did you get balls?
Simon: I've always had balls you've just never seen them.
Nathan: That's the gayest thing I've ever heard.

It's funny how some of us are concerned about the absence of Darcy when we went so large on Jackson.

Jackson may be beaten by some of the big boys in the ruck, but it brings him into the middle, where he excels at ground level.

I'm opposed to Reidy in the ruck when Darcy's out. Go with Jackson and bring in Voss. Yes, that means Treacy ends up as the relieving option, but I reckon he can handle it.

We are a different team when Darcy is a listed player.

He's a listed player. An injury listed player. I really hope he can come back strong.

i) R1 - Freo play well in Geelong, and fortunately the Cats didn’t get a run this week.

ii) R2 - Sydney are dropping off, we should win

iii) R3 - team will be switched on to avoid last year's disaster

iv) R4 - Bulldogs won last year by making throws legal, can't let this happen again. At least Bont might not play.

4-0 is possible but 0-4 is not impossible.

One game at a time I guess.

It's called wishful thinking but I wish we still had Lloyd Meek on our list. Almost bog performance for the weapons last night. This guy has improved out of sight. Beat Grudy hands down and also hit the score board.

I’m happy for Meek. He’s an example of overlooked talent given a chance to develop can sometimes work out. He’s nothing fancy but a solid contributor.
