Not sure of this but if my memory is correct I think Matt Carr may have been a late developer so maybe this is what the recruiting team have taken into consideration and seen some similarities in his son.
Recruited by Collingwood as an 18 year old in 1996, 2 seasons, no games, back to East Fremantle in 1997, drafted to St Kilda in 1998 Pre Season Draft, another year in reserves and then debuted in 1999 at age of 21 and played 28 games in 2 seasons for St Kilda before being traded to Fremantle at 2000 Draft in exchange for Craig Callaghan, interesting trade.
Debuted for Fremantle at age 23 and then played 136 games between 2001 and 2008. I've just lifted these facts from Wikipedia but Matthew's development does seem similar to Jaren's so he could be a surprise packet.

Okay, but what ruckmen do go as first round picks? Gawn was recruited by the Melbourne with their fifth selection and thirty-fourth overall. Tim English did go at 19 and Grundy at 18 and Rowan Marshall at 10. Jackson was recruited as forward.
This year there wasn't a ruckman picked until # 52.

Have it on good authority he’s coming in to play two games per year.

Both derbies.

And he’s just going to antagonise Harley all day, and when other weagles come to remonstrate he’s going to fight all of them at rhe same time.

"We could have had Hamish Davis, a Freo supporter I believe, who I think has more upside yet we allowed him to go to the mob up the road. They must still be laughing about that one. I really hope Jaren proves me wrong and wish him well in the Purple."

Agree completely. H. Davis slipped about 25 spots and was there for us on a platter. He was the best WA kid in the draft, bar none in my opinion. Will likely start as a forward, where he is very good, and develop into a big bodied mid. We easily could have taken him and got Carr in the rookie draft. I've a feeling he's gonna torch us when he plays. Eagles must've been pinching themselves when he was still available at 65-odd...

Was actually a Collingwood supporter growing up...

Not that I think Carr was the best use of our pick, Davis has very clear flaws with his kicking which is quite average. We've seen kicking in the modern game gather much greater importance with precision ball movement essential for any top side. In recent draft periods, we've seen clubs continually move away from drafting kids with questionable techniques and I'd use Dev Robertson as an example.

Rated a top 10 pick and a high one at that, there was a lot of surprise at how low he ended up being selected (including outcry from Freo fans that we opted for Caleb Serong instead) so much lower than expected. He was a big bodied midfielder who won a lot of the footy much like Davis although with less forward craft and more leadership. However, his kicking was always shaky and the reason he slid. Robertson has not been able to fix it enough to make the jump from WAFL/VFL level up to AFL standard and only tends to get a gig as a negating midfielder if at all.

In the modern game, there's less and less excuse not to be able to kick very well. Skills have lifted across the board and tactics require strong posession of the football. It has become far more difficult to carry players who don't offer enough with the ball in hand.

Davis may surprise and really work on his kicking but it's far too early to make that call.
Nathan: When did you get balls?
Simon: I've always had balls you've just never seen them.
Nathan: That's the gayest thing I've ever heard.

So Biz, you mentioned that the rumour was that Brisbane had shown an interest in JC for the mid-season draft (May 29th- Nominations between Wednesday May 8- 22). By intimation Freo had interest at that point, but convinced him to not nominate on the basis that they would take him in the 2024 ND with a nod and a wink?.

By May 8th he had played 2 ressie games then debuted in league (rounds 5 & 6, and then 7 during the nomination period, before playing round 8 after; and then being dropped back to ressies). He strung together another 5 League games in the back end of the year, they were pretty unimpressive.

JC can run a bit, can mark, but otherwise feels very outside and unlikely to get his own footy. Not trying to be hard on the kid, it's all in front of him now being on a list.

However, my real point is this- it feels like we were hopelessly compromised on that 3rd draft slot, with it committed on a handshake deal no matter who was available. It feels wrong to me on all levels.

Compared to how Knobel and Emmett were treated inside two years, and the hard-nosed way we have handled certain contract dealings over the past few years, it feels professionally compromised. If Carr gets to impact AFL even as much as Emmett did it will be some sort of Miracle on Veterans Parade.

Biz - I’m not sure where the idea comes from that Davis has poor kicking. There might be flaws in technique etc, but he’s often got the job done, kicks many goals even when under pressure, hits enough targets and has the work ethic to keep enhancing at all his skills. Many of the kids that went before him from WA at least - Bo Allen, Urqhart, Boxshall - aren’t any better a kick than Davis.

What he also has, is the mindset to win - and that is something not easily taught. In any case, I think he would have been a steal for us at 63 and still got JC in the rookie draft if we were that committed to him. But we’ll see what happens :)
