Murphy Reid comes from the same club that brought us Andy Brayshaw and appears to have the same sort of attitude that pushed Andy to improve himself and become one of the great midfielders in the modern game. I watched many of his Coates league games the last couple years and his U18 carnival this year was fantastic, earning himself the Vic M MVP. He is going to go very far with us.
While he won back-to-back premierships with Sandy this season, it was in that Grand Final where he injured his ankle at half time and missed combine testing as a result. I would have loved to see some of his agility, sprint and time trial running but I think that's an area he may look slightly slow on field but is actually a surprisingly fast and agile runner. Sandy's struggles in the second half of the GF were equally due to Reid's absence in the second half with injury as it was due to Ollie Hannaford carrying his side.
While normally I don't like to post highlight videos of players, instead preferring to pick out games where every disposal, tackle and interaction with the footy is shown, I think Reid's skillset is well captured in the below. His tricks and incredible footy IQ are well on show in every game so you can run through his youtube videos if you like or just check this one out.
As always, here's a video showing more of his personality in a goal kicking competition with a bunch of other boys who were drafted last night in the first round (all from Sandy). Towards the end, he mentions working on improving his acceleration and building size to compete at the next level.
Here's an extract from his rookie me profile (link above) which should give you everything you need to know about how he plays:
Reid is an incredibly poised user of the ball, proving efficient in both his decision making and execution. While not blessed with explosive speed, he is fleet of thought and can either use deft feints to relieve pressure or find teammates with creative disposal by hand and foot. He simply plays at a different tempo to others, and has some of the sharpest skills going around. Few can match him for impact per possession.
Along with sound fundamentals, Reid's ease in finding possessions comes on the back of a strong running base. He can rack up the ball both at and away from the contest, leaning on an enormous footy IQ to work into the right spots and hurt the opposition during attacking phases. It was a theme throughout Sandringham's engine room this year - players who could manufacture clean stoppage exits and punish sides on the spread.
Being reliable from week to week and impacting games consistently are factors which make top five prospects safe selections. Reid does both. He fulfilled team roles up forward and on the wing among high quality squads, but also took his chance when utilised as a midfielder to showcase his dependability. His only Coates Talent League performance under 21 disposals was the Grand Final, which he exited in the third quarter.
Only compounding Reid's hurt factor is his ability to hit the scoreboard prolifically. He bagged goals in six of nine outings for Sandringham this season, while also averaging a goal per game with Vic Metro. Among his best hauls were back-to-back efforts of three in Wildcard Round and the quarter finals, along with an identical haul against SA in the National Championships. He also had 25 disposals or more in each of those games.
Nathan: When did you get balls?
Simon: I've always had balls you've just never seen them.
Nathan: That's the gayest thing I've ever heard.

Looks great - Thanks Biz..
My only knock on him is his kicking.
Looks to lack depth and and has a unique style and ball drop.
Hopefully that is something he can improve on because everyting else looks A1..
I put it to you that his kicks only look that way because he is hitting targets and drawing players to the ball opposed to throwing it on the boot blindly to gain territory. Watch his games, he hits targets by foot and really creative, difficult to hit targets at that. In that highlights video he slots a goal from a 55m set shot, he can kick distance just fine.
He has a whole host of full game videos on youtube to check out, his kicking is elite.

Biz, he has an uncanny ability to put the ball to advantage of his teammate when pressured and unable to find the perfect option, and this shows up in his goalkicking. I think he could be that damaging small forward/mid that we will need when Mikey retires. I reckon our pure midfield stocks are full going forward, but with him and Bolton impacting forward and able to go mid and back when needed with elite disposal skills, sides are going to struggle to contain them.
I feel like we stole something. He looks way too classy for pick 17. His disposal under pressure is slick.
The mutant love child of Mickey B and Pendles.

Our biggest issue for a long time has been our midfield connection with our forwardline. Too often balls going inside 50m have come straight back out or left a lot of work for our forwardline to do. Capitalising on our midfield/clearance dominance has often been a struggle.
In trading for Bolton who is probably one of the most creative and best kicks inside 50m in the comp, we went a long way in solving that issue. However, Murphy is the best at that skill in this U18 crop. Getting him up to speed and into half forward would also play a massive part in converting a lot of Darcy, Serong, Brayshaw and Young's dominance at the coal face.
In hindsight, Murphy is probably the best fit for what we needed at the draft so this pick went very well for us.

I know it's a highlights reel, but he looks pretty special.
I'm not thinking Pendles or Mundy, more of a James Hird. Back in the day when Hird got the ball the Bombers would light up because they knew how good the next disposal was going to be. They'd put the effort in because they knew it wouldn't be wasted.
I'm looking forward to having Reid, Young, and Serong together. The opposition won't be able to tag all three out of the game.
One of my best qualities is that I very rarely get ahead of myself...
