TOPIC: AFL Draft day 2 and list management

FreoTiger AFL Draft day 2 and list management 3 weeks 1 day ago #1

FreoTiger
So Reid comes in Day 1- Best available selection I’d suggest but fair to say we have midfield depth. I think tomorrow should be centred on positional management.

My thoughts:
Tall defenders- Cox, Pearce, MCDonald, Draper, Davies-Well and truely covered, no picks this year
Mid defender- Chapman, Walker, Ryan- Good, if Draper has flexibility, area is covered
Small defenders/ rebounders- Clarke, Aish, Wagner, Warner- As Belly said, area for focus, lacks depth and succession, not sure any mids (other than Young have defensive flexibility. Priority for pick 30. ( now 38) but don’t expect that pick will have the quality to solve this gap.
Ruck - Darcy, Jackson, Reidy- Don’t want to invest too much considering what we have but should look at rookie opportunity.
Mids- Fair to say we have depth and succession- 1st choice Bradshaw, Serong, Young and Sharp &Johnson on the outside plus Fyfe, O’Meara, Erasmus, Brodie and O’Driscoll immediate depth and Reid a future replacement. No more on day 2 although one thing we lack is bigger bodies.
Mid/Forward- Bolton, Banfield, Switkowski, Fredrick and Simpson- I feel this area is covered with Reid an additional option now
Small forward- Walters, Delean - An area lacking depth but I feel there is enough dynamic mid/forward to cover. Late pick/rookie for one of those prospect picks.
Mid forward-Sturt- not a lot but really only required if talls have depth issues.
Tall forwards- Amiss, Tracey, Voss, Jones (recent injury concern)- whilst A&T are young and talented, we have Tabs, Kuek delisted and Jones questionable, I’d consider this area for pick 38 if someone has slide to that pick.

I’ve heard that club has not only registered Carr as option for F/S but have told him he will be picked up.

Based on Cal Twomey's rankings, the below players remain available:

18 Jack Whitlock
20 Jobe Shanahan
28 Alex Dodson
29 Christian Moraes
30 Tom Gross

Given our next pick is 7 selections away, there's a good chance all are gone however none other than Whitlock and Shanahan would probably interest me and they are probably the certainties to be gone by our pick.

Angus Clarke who is a 188cm rebounding defender from SA with good defensive capabilities has been highly linked to us and I don't see anyone else wanting to take him before us. He's probably the next best pick out of the half backs and I can see us pulling the trigger. However, we've also shown some interest in mature ager Riley Bice who played for Werribee and was fantastic this year. He may not make it to our last pick so taking him early here is a possibility.

Not having selected Berry, if we wanted another small forward then Jasper Algar is the next best small forward available. Then there's Sam Toner who has come out of nowhere to be a likely draft pick this year. He is a year older and only played local footy until being plucked out of obscurity late this season and performed fantastically. I could see us taking the gamble on him.

If we decide on more of a half forward/mid option then Hamish Davis and Hugh Boxshall are likely options to fill the gap. It all really depends on what the club sees as a need and the talent available.

I should also point out that we'll be picking Max Knobel back up as a rookie assuming no one else swoops on him first so our ruck stocks are sorted.
Nathan: When did you get balls?
Simon: I've always had balls you've just never seen them.
Nathan: That's the gayest thing I've ever heard.

I'd really like Angus Clarke based on the highlight reels and I wouldn't mind Hamish Davis or Hugh Boxshall either. Downside on Boxshall is an Eagles supporter but we could give payback for grabbing Allan. I'd still prefer Davis. I'm a bit worried about losing Knobel after seeing the seeming reluctance of clubs to commit to the talented talls in this group who would require a few years investment to get up to AFL standard. I also wouldn't mind grabbing Gerreyn as he has a bit of agility for a big man as well as very good marking ability in forward line.

Charlie Nichols. ESPN had him going at 55.

55. Geelong - Charlie Nicholls
Central District/South Australia
FWD, 197cm

A project key position player for the Cats to develop, Nicholls is long and rangy and deceptively quick off the mark. He kicks goals almost exclusively from lead-ups and needs to add size to become a contested marking threat. Nicholls has suitors in the Pies and Lions at this stage as well.

Pick 34: Fremantle selects
AFL live blog says:
A versatile player who can operate as a third tall either in defence or attack. Has a solid turn of pace.

Nicholls is a really athletic tall, and I would imagine defence is where he will end up. He's got some excellent key defenders to learn from at Freo, but he's already got all of them covered for speed.

Is it just me or can someone explain why Jaren Carr was such a good pick up? It's not like he's got any attention anywhere in draft calculations and his stats at SF colts aren't anything to get excited about.

I have to agree, the only positive aspects of Jaren's selection are the romantic feel good notion of being a father/son pick and the fact that he is a more mature aged body who can be dumped straight into the hurly burly of AFL football next season if needed
Contrary to many so called experts the Claremont Footy club once again supplied a good crop of kids to the AFL through the draft. A pity we didn't pick up any but there's always the Rookie Draft tomorrow

Only eight W.A. players selected, that's pretty poor. Four from Claremont. If I've checked correctly.

Only 10 from South Australia and that includes 2 Camporeale twins. And I'm pretty sure they'll be more WA kids in Rookie draft starting with Malakai Champion. The point I make with Claremont has supplied 4 draftees from their colts premiership team which is half of WA's supply with still the Rookie draft to come. I guess my main issue is that whenever a West Australian kid is put forward as a Draft prospect they are just written off by certain people on this site as inferior to interstate kids. True our prospects are in the minority compared to those East of the border but give credit where it's due. Apart from Bo Allan and perhaps Hamish Davis none have been acknowledged as a chance when I've mentioned them, particularly those members of the Claremont colts premiership team. Some of us may know a fair bit about the Draft and have some insight to the kids on offer but we do not know everything.

Gumnut, are you suggesting that some WA kids didn’t get drafted over the past two days because they were written off on here?

I reckon David Walls reads Dockerland as part of his due diligence on potential draftees for sure, but it also appears the players do too, can't help but notice the players Gumnut has written off instantly become good players, Treacy, Switkowski, Walker to name a few. Fully expect now the latest write off Cooper Simpson to explode in 2025, brownlow smokey for sure.

Bending the truth there Timbo, I have never ever written off the Big Cohuna. I have always pushed him as a future star for us even when the WAFL Tribunal were rubbing him out for not playing nice with the other WAFL kiddies. As for Switta and Walker I have never doubted their abilities or endeavour but just pointed out how many times Brandon is unnecessarily caught holding the ball in opponents scoring zone or Switta contributes zero to our scoreboard efforts. If they have taken notice and improved their game them good for them but I hope not. They are invaluable members of our line up and Switta in particular impressed me greatly with his leadership in the latter half of the season..
And I've never written off Cooper Simpson, just stated the blinking obvious, that he seems to have dropped off in his development since the start of the season.

No Shady, I'm just making the point that certain people write WA kids off needlessly and then they do get drafted. Makes you wonder about their knowledge of the West Australian talent. Aiden Riddle going to Rookie list now makes 5 taken from Claremont's Colts Premiership team. A pretty healthy strike rate by anyone's standards, that's a quarter of their best team taken at the draft, one of the best Australia wide I would imagine.
