I don't really understand at all why clubs get a compensation pick for a free agent leaving. If you draft a player, and they have given a club 8 years of service and then want to leave, why is a club rewarded for that? Haven't they already had a return on their draft investment? if they want to keep the player they should make the case to the player (including by offering more money).
