Sydney superstar Chad Warner set to be on the table this time next year as WA clubs play long game
Sydney’s abysmal grand final performance removed any chance of Chad Warner coming home early but reports are swirling the superstar Swan will be on the table next year.

In the lead-up until the 2024 grand final there were some suggestions that should Sydney prevail Warner may have returned home on a high.

However, after their 60-point belting, Warner is set to remain a Swan, though, for how much longer appears to be up in the air with his contract expiring at the end of 2025.
He also put contract talks on hold in June of this year.

“WA-based clubs are of the belief it is his intention to return home at the end of next year. He’s stubborn enough to believe he can get through a whole season of a contract impasse. They believe it’s not an ambit claim, it’s not a contract negotiation,” AFL journalist Jon Ralph told Fox Footy’s On the Couch.

“He and his partner, who’s also from Perth, just want to go home. They even believe that if Sydney had won this game, he might have put in a trade request. A really small chance, but it’s absolutely zero now.

“This is a 12-month saga. It’s not going to be easy for this club to negotiate through. It’s another distraction this football club doesn’t need coming off this loss.”

“This is a 12-month saga. It’s not going to be easy for this club to negotiate through. It’s another distraction this football club doesn’t need coming off this loss.”
A report from (The Snitch insert WC mouthpiece) back in June revealed Fremantle had paid for Warner and his partner Alice to stay at Crown with the Dockers keen to play the long game over the star.
Channel Nine’s Tom Morris also said West Coast are prepared to offer big money once he comes on the market.

“I think there is going to be massive money offered to Chad Warner. I’m talking 10, 12, 14 million dollars across nine, 10 or 11 years.
“That’s the sort of money that is going to be thrown around for a player of Chad Warner’s calibre from the West Coast Eagles.

“The go home factor as well is real, even more real than the money that is offered.”

Former Richmond superstar Matthew Richardson suggested the Swans should get proactive and seek a trade for the star now rather than leaving themselves open to a season of speculation.

“The rumour mill is in overdrive Warner will go west at the end of next year to play with one of the WA clubs in his home state. This issue will be a massive distraction all year for the Swans,” Richardson wrote for The Nightly.

“With four grand finals losses in a row, the last two being soul-destroying defeats, maybe Sydney need to get aggressive in this trade period and move Warner on now. A very tough call to make, but it may be the right one.”

Though Warner was below his best in the grand final he was still one of the strongest performers for Sydney finishing with 21 disposals and a goal.

He had a career best season in 2024 averaging more than 23 disposals, four clearances and kicking a career high 35 goals across his 25 games.

The burning question is (and I’ll put on my bulletproof vest in prep for replies) do you let someone like Brayshaw go in order to get it done?
The rumour mill says St Kilda are throwing huge money at Brayshaw, so does it make sense to swap him out for someone who adds pace to our somewhat one-paced midfield?
Especially if we spend all our picks get Bolton and/or Kozzy etc.

No, Brayshaw is part of the decor at Freo. His mentality and approach are a big part of the camaraderie the players have and the spirit the club has. He isn't going anywhere and I don't think the situation is a one or the other. Next year trading opens up with draft picks up to 2 years in advance able to be used, we will be fine to make a play next season if required.

We are likely to survive on NGA kids for the next couple of years while we burn our draft picks for established young star West Aussie talent. Things look well suited to our list management strategy atm.

Simon: I've always had balls you've just never seen them.
Nathan: That's the gayest thing I've ever heard.

I agree with you in principle, Biz, but people are “part of the decor” until they’re not. He’s a Vic kid (yes with some WA ties) with a Vic partner (I think……happy to be corrected) who is nearing parenting age etc…..and things change. He can love Freo and still leave, especially if StK offer him $1.1m compared to freo’s $850 (I pulled those numbers out of my a$$ as hypothetical).
I hope you’re right and we can get it done anyway, but my question was more “if that’s what it took, would you do it?”.

I would do it but I dont believe he would hold us to ransom. He is a decent person who has helped build this team and he would want to see it through.

Joe makes a pretty convincing argument. If Brayshaw gives an inkling that he’s not willing to extend when his contract expires at the end of next season then do a deal now while he has more currency.

NO, JOE!!!!!
But, if we're really serious about Warner we should be pushing to get him here for next season so we can push our hardest for a flag. And no trading cornerstones of our playing group like Brayshaw, I'd take him ahead of Warner any day of the week and pay him more as well.

What message would you be sending to the rest of the group if you trade out one of the key pillars of the team?
Hard no.
And if I was Caroline Wilson I'd be demanding someone be sacked for asking such a question.

However...if Andy wants to leave and chase the dollars under Ross....dunno what to think...dirty?

A lot of responses seem to think I’m suggesting just turfing him out the door to get Warner in. That’s not at all what I’m suggesting. He’s a restricted free agent next year who may, at some point, think about going home for his own reasons (or several million of them), and if so, do we cash in on his value at its peak so we can get someone else of very high quality. We could obviously also match the bid and make him stay.
The “message” I think it would send to the rest of the playing group is “you’ve been amazing for us and we’ll repay you by accommodating a win/win deal that makes everyone happy”.
If everyone ends up happy…..that’s just good business. And good business and solid strategy wins flags, romanticism doesn’t.

Are you saying winning a flag with Brayshaw in the team is romanticism because Warner may be available and is the business?

This time of year is so full of sxxx this rubbish about Tim Kelly.

That is the report from SEN’s Sam Edmund who suggests the 30-year-old is a “reasonable chance” to make a cross-town move from the Eagles to the Dockers this trade period.

Anyway I would rather the Chad than this guy.

Joe's statement is based on a fallacy which is why you could never answer anything but no. It's based on Brayshaw WANTING out for whatever reason which he very much doesn't. He's shown on every occasion how dedicated to the club and its goals he is, that he and his partner want to be here in WA, that he doesn't care about the money (he will still be paid incredibly well regardless), that he wants to play at Freo with his mates like Serong, that he is desperate to be part of that first premiership side at Freo, and that is his ultimate goal.

How do you answer a question about trading Brayshaw based on something that won't happen (him wanting to leave Freo) and is not a part of his DNA? You don't. It's not really a consideration.

Andy Brayshaw was actually born in Sth Australia, his grandparents on his Dad’s side are in WA as is his brother Hamish who had a stint a the Slimers. His dad played for Claremont before North Melbourne but I gather they stayed in Vic for Angus... Andy has very strong connections with WA and his GF is from Vic, they met at school.
He’s not going anywhere but if he does, the Club will be to blame IMO.
