Beginning to think that giving a million dollars to a ruckman (e.g., Grundy, and close to what Freo have done with Darcy) doesn't seem to be an effective strategy, so long as there's a half-decent back-up available (e.g., Meek, Darcy Fort) who can do the job at a far less cost.

Think we’ve saved more money in the cap. Don’t think Chad Warner’s going anywhere next year.

Well I hope we haven't committed anything towards getting Chad Warner yet, we don't need him. Like all the other Sydney "stars", he doesn't defend and he's also one of the worst offenders along with Gulden and Blakey. Save our money for real stars who do all the hard work every week like Andy Brayshaw.

That's ridiculous Gumnut, You're going to base anyone's worth on one game of the season. So how did Sydney do as well as they did with all those "losers"?

So if you're going to judge it like that, nobody would want Heeney, Gulden, Papley, Rampe, Rowbottom, Blakey, in fact anybody as they didn't have a winner all day.

I will say though that I'm glad we haven't persevered with the idea of getting McDonald as he's doing very little all year, unlike Warner who without, Sydney wouldn't have got as far as they did.

The Swans pressure rating was very low, according to Chad Warner 158. Don’t bring effort and commitment and you’re half way to losing a close game or getting flogged.

Sydney didn’t adjust to the shape/size of the MCG, the Lions almost doubled the Swans marks and won uncontested possessions easily.

Looks like Sydney played their GF the week before.

Heeney would be very disappointed with his game, given how well he played in the Colgate commercial.

I’ll have a Chad Warner before a Liam Baker any day.

And if either Sydney or Brisbane had Darcy at their disposal he’d have been their first choice ruck for the grand final.

It's not just 1 game though. Sydney had a game plan which worked for just over half the season which was to occupy the middle ground and pick off opposition teams trying to attack through the centre corridor with fast attacking runners in Blakey, Warner, Gulden, McInerney, Cunningham and Rowbottom. After our game when we beat them in Sydney they were found out by a lot of teams and these guys just don't play defence. In the GF whenever Brisbane started to move the ball forward they had loose players everywhere due mainly to the fact that these star players not picking up an opponent. Their tall forwards are also not a very consistent bunch and struggle to take marks, as Josh Draper and co demonstrated when we beat them. Yes, Chad Warner is a very talented young player but he is not worth the 2 first rounders and one million dollar annual salary being touted in the media and many in this forum

Gumnut, I made that comment about Warner after we beat them and was howled down. But he is a front runner.

Being touted by who here? Particularly as he isn't even out of contract until end of next year and nothing has been said that he is actually leaving?

Plus you're putting the loss down to everything Sydney. Not one mention that Brisbane won in all areas of the game. All Sydney's weakness and nothing to do with Brisbane's dominance.

Their tall forwards are definitely their weakness and if it wasn't for their midfielders kicking goals they wouldn't have got as far as they did.

Plus off course the one thing we don't have in our midfield is a goalkicker. Our best this year was Young with 13.

I think we already have a goalkicker in Nathan O'Driscoll, if he can stay on the park. He showed when he first played in 2022 his ability to kick goals from a long way out and again when he returned from injury at the end of this season the ability to burst away from a centre clearance to goal. He needs to be encouraged to do this and given opportunities to play consistently in the midfield. I'm also confident in Jeremy Sharp's ability to develop this side of his game as well. Part of our problem seems to be that they are scared to take the long shot at goal, something that needs to be encouraged and developed at training. And on the defensive side of things Warner could only muster up the effort to lay 1 tackle yesterday while we have a guy languishing in the WAFL who regularly gets 30 plus disposals yet one of the reasons offered up tat he can't get a game in AFL is his lack of defensive efforts. By all means try to get Warner, but not by tossing away multiple first round draft picks and enormous amounts of salary whilst our own developed stars are paid less. He is not worth more than Young, Serong, Brayshaw, Jackson, Treacy or Darcy for that matter. I would rather give them a few extra dollars to keep them at the club than commit to front runners who can't get the job done in a high pressure finals game.

Isn't the definition of a front runner someone who only plays well when his team does well? I mean we could say the same for Freddy.
And someone who had the equal third most disposals for his losing team, had the most metres gained for his team, most inside 50's for his team, equal third most score involvements for his team and most uncontested possessions in his losing team, seems like a pretty good return for an outside receiving midfielder, which is his role of course, particularly for a front runner.

O'Driscoll might, Sharp isn't, Warner does. And still haven't seen who has said here two first round picks and what amount he is going to be paid.

And obviously Ersamus is not competing against him for a position. He is an inside mid similar to what we have at the moment which is why he can't get regular game, although he should be playing before Johnson.

What a player is worth in terms of their annual salary and contract length, and what you have to trade to get them is factor of market, their current contract, if player nominates a specific club, personal circumstances, and any behind door commitment the ‘new’ club has made.

Jack Martin cost CFC nothing at trade cost them $$$s and a list spot.

Cerra and Judd out of contract … FFC and WCE had to get best deals they could.

Weller cost GGS pick 2 because we held our nerve and they promised him they’d draft him.

Collingwood probably paid overs for Schultz because he was contracted.

The Warner situation - unless we hear more from him - feels like he is seeking maximum cash and an offer to ‘pry’ him out of Sydney.

Richmond players feel more like a fire sale.

(And don’t stress over the Media Nullarbor tax … as apparently if you’re flying east to west it’s two first round picks, and one has to be top 10, if you’re flying West to East it’s late first round early second and an exchange of later picks.)
