i. The chicken breast main course was very moist and tender but pretty bog standard. Like the end of the season, those of us waiting with anticipation for it's arrival accompanied by potato rose and carrot fondant were left slightly disappointed to find a small pile of baked potato slices and a boiled carrot* with some gravy on top.

ii. The lamb entree, on the other hand, was all class.

iii. Brayshaw is going nowhere else than into Freo's midfield on an ongoing weekly basis.

iv. Serong will make a fine Club Captain when the time comes. Those two sharing it would not be a bad thing. He wants everyone to be better and wants to help them to do it.

v. Jye Amiss is very tall

vi. Luke Ryan is a bloody ripper. As is Gabby O'Sullivan. Worthy life member inductees. There were many reminders during the night that Lukey was draft pick 66.

vii. There is a general air of utter pissedoffedness through the whole club about how the season 2024 capitulated, and it is being openly acknowledged and addressed. Every speech said so. Every player I spoke to, Sam Switkowski, Michael Frederick, Sam Sturt and Michael Walters, without even asking them directly about it, started out saying they were very disappointed and each was still reflecting today how it has left a bitter taste in their mouths.

I'm expecting a steely determination to underpin the start of pre-season return and into next year.

viii. If you can get your hands on some cheap run out stock of that pirate life fremantler lager, go for it! It's surprisingly good beer.

*Edit, it may have been steamed, but either way it was just a chunk of carrot.

It was also awesome to see Brandon Walker finish in the top 10 on the leader board.

Just a thought Mushie...

next time you add an edit to further describe the bedraggled state of a carrot, whether fondant or fop, could you perhaps try to manipulate the edit so that it doesn't immediately strike a thirsty punter as being a critique of the beer?

Great article Mushy for those of us that couldn’t afford or bring ourselves to spend the $45,000 per person to attend the event.
How about an annual end of season giant bloody sausage sizzle at Freo or Cockburn if must be with players and members, first in get to attend or give everyone a turn about each year. I’d be prepared to pay $20-$30 for a snag and bun, excessive I know but I’d expect snags from Deutchland and to pay for a beer.

Sell t-shirts and caps etc. Like a FFC bloody ginormous AFL Royal Show, without William and Kate, although we could invite them too if they’re in the neighbourhood.

Yeh Noddy a great idea, seeing that the local form of socialising had been going on for many many years.
Nothing better for me than going to watch EF,and between Qtr's,sliding down the embankment on a length of cardboard, with a lot of other kids having a wow of a time.
That and as i became a beer drinker, the after game celebrations or woes in the club ,where you mingled with the players and a lot of supporters.
Meat raffles etc were very popular.
And there was plenty of female talent there too, had many conversations but only some success, but we all knew they were wanting to talk to league players.
That's what is sorely missing the camaraderie of being a supporter ,to get to know who everyone else was.
Thats was one thing i enjoyed about the 30 year get together, had a great chat to a bunch of supporters who i had never met but who were all as passionate.
One thing I've always envied about the Vic clubs they had all that and still do.

Fair cop, Guy. I am sorry.

Noddy, I get where you are coming from and I’d be all in for a members’ barbie. No need to dis a major club event and awards night, though. I was a last minute call up and I doubt there were many there who paid out of their own post-tax dollars to attend. Elitist as that may sound, the crowd still had a grassroots feel. The carrots and potatoes story was just symbolic of 2024, building so well to a crescendo only to hit a series of flat notes before the finale, leaving everyone feeling like a rubbery root vegetable smeared with cheap gravy.

Josh Treacy was refreshingly eloquent. And from Sutherland to Garlick to Longmuir to Pearce all the way to Draper, the message was pretty clear that there were strides made this year but enough’s enough.

Brayshaw was up-front in saying this was the best team he has ever been a part of, better than 2022 and the fact that they could not measure up to the achievement of the 2022 side has him smarting.

There was not a hint of a Pavlich 2013 GF pause before “we’ll be back” while partially shouting silent loud thoughts from inside his mind that “I dunno if I should have said that.”

The feeling is different. They want it now.

Every AFL team has that same determination .

If you can’t kick goals from 30 m in front or hit a simple player on the lead , no matter how hard you train or effort you do , you won’t be playing deep into finals.

Poor execution cost them , and it was not even hard execution just poor skills.

That requires absolute focus and also for the players they recruited to have that talent.

I disagree. I think they all thought they had the Essendon game won after Jye kicked his third goal. I saw it on their faces. They switched off after that.

Then the panic set after Essendon got a couple back. And the panic never left for the rest of the season.

I hope that this club, after 30 years, will, finally, ffs, develop a hard edge and killer instinct to pound other teams into the ground once they have them on the ropes. I want to see less flamboyant goal celebrations when a business like fist bump and a nod will do. I want to see a finals win followed up with nothing more than a tick of a box and bored faces at a GF parade. Show me a beating of the chest when you lift the bloody cup.

It’s pretty easy to reflect on missed opportunities etc when you have missed the finals. Easy and it’s just lip service.
Throughout the season when the job had to be done - cement a top 4 spot, cement a top 8 spot, make the finals - they simply couldn’t get it done.
And looking at the quality of the finals games so far, I reckon Freo would have struggled to compete.
Yeah they can beat any team on their day and yeah they have a talented , young list and all that but I’m not buying it. Until Freo can win consistently, put away poor teams comfortably and step up and compete with top 4 teams then I’ll be forever cynical.
They’ll do that to ya this club.

Ask Hipwood. He's playing in a PF tomorrow after missing from close range dead in front last weekend.

the whole "develop a hard edge/killer instinct" narrative has this underlying inference that there's some long running all pervasive cultural problem rooted in its history

I don't buy into it. the solutions are to be found not just in playe mindset but somehwere in managing rhe list, maintaining fitness, getting the game plans that fit the opposition and the circumstances and a balance between team focus and individual player needs.

will we miss Bob Murphy or Matthew Boyd? Will Bolton be the messiah?

I think we might miss Bob Murphy, seems like the heart and soul of a club type guy, fits with Garlick's approach and the way it seems like we're building a culture at the club where everyone seems to get along well together and not want to leave. Our young leaders also seem to have built this and the desire to succeed as is often mentioned by Caleb Serong, Andy Brayshaw, Hayden Young, Luke Ryan and others. Hopefully this will lead tour first Flag next year.
