I felt bad having a Tabs Appreciation Post, and not having one for Ethan Hughes. Part of the reason is that at one of the Family Days when my young son got to the signing line he knew every player by name, then got to Ethan Hughes, looked directly at him, then me, and said loudly ‘Who is that?’. Ethan looked a little hurt.
I feel like that summed up his Freo career. He turned up all the time, played hard, played mostly well, and people were always looking ahead to someone else to take his spot. The club barely bothered to get him off the Rookie list. In an era when small and medium defenders seem to be selected for anything other than their defense, he was a team-first guy who played his role. He did it when Freo was largely pretty lousy.
And despite all that played over 100 games for Freo. Thanks Ethan. Hopefully in your next gig you get the star treatment.
