TOPIC: Taberner Appreciation Post

He’s been a bit of a polarising figure, but I think Tabs deserves a shout out after his delisting. He came in as a Rookie List player, and seemingly through hard work and persistence he turned himself into a good – and for a few years perhaps a very good – AFL player. He never seemed to put a foot wrong outside of footy, and he was a loyal servant of the club.

He was also responsible for one of the low-key funniest melee moments in Freo history.

Thanks for everything Tabs.

Such a quietly alpha move. Takes a special mind to conceive it. Could run and get to the footy, and for a very long time was our best contested mark. Good luck with the rest of it TBRNR, one of the spookiest units ever on our list. In an Urban Dictionary way.

One of my favourites. Yes, it is definitely time for Tabs to go, but he's done well over the years.

Thanks Tabs.

Strong vote of thanks from me: a great player at his best and a terrific fellow off the field, I'm reliably informed. The Rowell untuck sums up Tabs' quiet, cerebral approach to the game. I wish him every success in future.

In the Worst.
Matt Taberner’s AFL career may not be over with several clubs interested in throwing the delisted Fremantle forward a football lifeline.

The West Australian understands several clubs have enquired about Taberner who was axed by the Dockers on Wednesday after 12 years at the club.

Taberner, 31, was one of four players cut by the Dockers this week, but is a chance to find a new home ahead of next season.

Several eastern states’ clubs are seeking ready-made tall forwards.

The Victorian product carved out a strong career at the harbour club, booting 173 goals in 125 games after being picked up as a rookie in 2012.

Taberner kicked a career-high 37 goals in 16 games in 2021 and booted a career-best seven against Essendon in round five of 2022.

He was also named in the 40-man All-Australian squad in 2020 after kicking 29 goals in 16 games in the COVID-shortened season to finish fifth in the Coleman Medal.

‘When most of his fellow players were asked who is the strangest player in the group, yep Tabs was it’

Fact check?

From observation only, I think he gave his go at the AFL his best shot and that’s about all a supporter can ask.

Thanks for your effort and good luck to the big fella in life post AFL.

Noddy on the podcast in the rooms after a game ,the question was asked a few times over time ,like favourite likes for food and such, but i recall them being asked about the strangest or weirdest player and tabs always came up.
Even on the club website if you want too scroll back through a lot of interviews and a series of quick answers they asked the players after training etc ,that question came up a lot.
Here's a link for all the podcasts ,vodcast ,etc if you feel like scrolling .www.fremantlefc.com.au/podcasts

Wikipedia suggests his nickname is “crab”. I doubt that.
More than a decade in the AFL is a major achievement that few attain. Tony Armstrong talks of the mental toll on less favoured players of not being selected each week, and Tabs suffered more than most from expectations that he follow Pav, Big respect from me.

If as reports suggest that Melbourne, Brisbane and Collingwood are interested in him , he will be playing in a grand final side next year as opposed to a side that has only played finals in one of the last 8 years!!

Watching Dixon run around for Port, you could make a decent argument they'd be better off with Tabs out there.

Thanks Tabbs. Held up a key position while the club tried repeatedly to get big names in to replace him. Had a better career than some guys we failed to get (Mitch Clark? and others). Held down the key forward post while Hogan got the big bucks for nothing. If we had gone to the draft early on for a key forward, things could have been very different, Tabs might have been half of a duo, not the main guy. Lucky we had him. Hope he retires and goes on to make use of his big brain. All the best.

Good luck to Tabs. He was a decent human Being. I have started a Go Fund me page to help out all the Lithuanians who are now trying to work out life without TBRNR.
