Some food for thought with recent first round draft pick trade deals for players. Specifically involving Freo.
2023 Collingwood trade in Schultz for pick 34 and one of the first rounders Freo hold this year.
2022 Jackson to Freo for trade out pick 13 plus 2023 first and second rounder.
2021 Carlton traded in Adam Cerra for pick 6 which became Jye Amiss
2020 Freo did not trade out or up the first round pick, 14, became Heath Chapman
2019 St Kilda traded in Brad Hill for Pick 10 (plus some other late round and future year picks and Acres as steak knives). Pick 10 was uptraded with other stuff to Melbourne for pick 8, so we had picks 7, 8 and 9 which we bluffed but didn’t offer for Tim Kelly. Pick 7 became Hayden Young. Pick 8 became Caleb Serong.
So,
The Jackson one, still don’t know, Melbourne got Matthew Jefferson (who?) in 2022 and Caleb Windsor in 2023. This may finally be a player for pick win, but Windsor could turn into a gun and make it a draw.
As for the rest… it says to me that unless Peter Bell & Co are just the ants’ pants of traders and only have wins no matter what the player versus pick direction, we should use extreme caution in throwing any first round draft picks at teams for players.
