According to the CEO why not?
Fremantle Dockers expect contracted stars Nat Fyfe and Michael Walters to play AFL in 2025
Fremantle chief executive Simon Garlick has backed veterans Nat Fyfe and Michael Walters to play on next season saying he has full confidence in their ability to do important jobs for the team.

The Dockers’ season came to an end on Sunday with a 20-point loss to Port Adelaide seeing them finish 10th on the ladder. The club lost its last four games to slide from third position and experts turned the heat up on Fyfe and Walters at the end of the game.

The pair have one year remaining on their contracts but coach Justin Longmuir said he’d be speaking to them about 2025 during their exit interviews.

Garlick said there was no reason why they wouldn’t continue playing.

“I think they’ll be there next year, and our intent is that they see out their contract,” Garlick told The West Australian.

“They’re contracted for next year. They provide significant value in complementing our youth, both on and off the field and at times in crucial stages on game day.”

Fyfe played 22 games this season which was his highest tally since 2013. But he regularly came off the bench, was the sub once and got subbed out three times. He averaged 19 disposals and 4.4 clearances per game.
Walters suffered two hamstring injuries and played 17 games, which included four as the sub. He kicked 17 goals.

Fyfe turns 33 next month while Walters will be 34 in January. Both men are closing in on 250 games.

Garlick said it was wrong to expect them to play to the standard from their halcyon days.

“Sometimes players like these are a victim of their own standards and success historically. We’re talking about iconic figures of our club and more broadly, the game,” he said.
“Fyfey’s record speaks for itself. He dominated the competition for an extended period. So we, and Nat, are absolutely clear in our expectations of him and the role he can play for us, which we’ve seen at times this year has been incredibly valuable.

“It might not be to the same standard as Nat Fyfe at his prime, but there’s a handful of players in the history of the game that could actually live up to that.

“Sonny’s been a superstar at our club for 15 years now and finishes as well as anyone in the history of our club has done. So we’ll continue to work through with both of them and make sure we get to the right spot.”
Wonder if that view will change before the exit interviews.?

That's the equivalent of saying "he's a contracted player and isn't up for trade".

They both have contracts so club can't pay them out and delist them for 2025 unless they agree.

Reference to their value off-field in the article ... maybe some sort of gig at club next year and not necessarily playing.

you'd be shocked to hear anything else.

"Yeah, what a crap way to end the season. We'll be tearing up Nat and Son Son's contracts - even they have a year to run they're just way below expectations and we can't afford to carry passengers on our list. The benefits to our youth getting more game time is worth the cost of the payout" said Simon G.

Behind the scenes it will be

Son son / Fyfey you’ve been a great servant of our club and you have a year to run in your contract. You have a lot still to offer…… at Peel.

Why couldn't both of them be better next year than this year?

It felt like Fyfe spent most of the year looking like he was worried about getting injured, getting a year under his belt will boost the confidence for next year, particularly if he gets a good preseason under his belt.

Injuries could cruel either of their season, but that's the same for all players.

If we get Shai Bolton it will make it hard for Son Son I would think. Warner would be an obvious replacement for Fyfe who has been a great of the club obviously.

Even though neither of them put in the individual performances they used to produce, I still think we're a bettre team with them in it - especially Fyfe who I thought did a lot of grunt work on ball to allow Serong and Brayshaw a little more space to play.

Bolton is a direct like for like replacement for Walters. If he stays then he's stopping the development of Cooper Simpson and Jack Delean. We have young players on the list already who will step up to take Fyfe's spot but he still has a place on our list and has proven to still be a damaging player at AFL level.

Delean spent most of the season in Peel reserves so I think I'd prefer Bolton.

And Walters, I think Switkowski could be sharing a spot with Walters next year, if we get Bolton.

I've been a critic of Switta's input earlier in the season but I must admit that I've realy warmed to him this year and I'd have him as one the first picked ahead of Bolton, especially when he's used in the midfield where he generates a lot of speed and run, along with tackling pressure which we need as our more senior citizens don't seem to tackle much.

Switta is a ripper and I imagine would be one of the first picked, but although he's elite at creating pressure, decision-making and finding a step to break clear and create opportunities in congestion, he can't take a mark, can't separate on a lead, and is a below-average finisher for a small forward. So, he can contribute to goals, but he can't really be on the end of them.

Walters has become a very similar player, but not quite as good. If Walters plays next year, I reckon he's Switta's back-up.

Team balance is everything, and I reckon both Switta and Walters would look even better next to someone like Bolton, and vice versa.
