TOPIC: Season 2024

TheColonel Season 2024 1 month 1 week ago #1

TheColonel
What have we learnt.
i. Poor kicking, poor handballs, fumbling all contributed to the end of our season.
ii. We have the makings of an extremely good side for years to come.
iii. Crucial injuries at the wrong time have not helped.
iv. Coaching could be a bit more aggressive and/or proactive at times.
v. When we are "on" we look unbeatable.
vi. it is a long season.

Terrible coaching/player mindset when the heat comes on. Tonight either the players did not know forward strategy or did not follow it.

Too much sentiment to giving coaches “best 22” extra chances. A sub who can only play in the forward pocket is a disgrace. The lack of opportunity to the likes of Brodie, Erasmus and Simpson to allow Walters, Fyfe and O’Meara to play cannot continue to be accepted, especially when you didn’t make finals anyway.

I get the impression the club lacks the strength in key decision makers to do what it takes to win.

Point (iii) is worth underlining.
We happened to be without Pearce, Treacy and Darcy for the last three games, and those games were against the teams that ended up 2nd, 3rd and 4th.
I feel like some fans believed we were entitled to win those games just on willpower, that we lost because effort was not put in. Carlton went from sure grand finalists to barely squeaking into eighth when injuries hit, why would we think we should be immune from the effects of losing our best defender, best forward and best ruckman?
We have a very talented side that can beat anyone when we’re fit and firing. But then there are a bunch of other teams who can say the same.
I’d like to see us fix our depth issues in the off season. Treacy’s absence in particular was a key reason we didn’t win any of our last three games. We really don’t have a quality ‘next man up’ for him.
And then the last piece of the puzzle is mentality. Starting games too sleepily, not being able to hold onto late leads - these have been issues for longer than just this season, and need to be fixed for next season if JL is to be the man to take them all the way.

I just want to say I was entertained this season by Freo and we were in a lot of games where it came down to the wire. The lads did alright, we lost our spine in the last 4 weeks, but that is footy. I'm kind of glad we get to have a break and get another preseason into the young lads and the group get to reset and get over their niggles. I feel like 2025 we will have more fun again.

Yes, B1R1, watching Freo has become fun again. And yes we did do a good job this year. If we could choose who was going to go down injured in the last quarter of the season, those three would be the last on that list.

Sloby Season 2024 1 month 1 week ago #6

Sloby
Disappointing to be sure, but, there are silver linings everywhere:

- the emergence of Hayden Young as top notch onballer
- the resurgence of Andy Brayshaw as a top notch onballer
- the confirmation of Caleb Serong as a top notch onballer
- the rise of Josh Treacy as potent key forward
- the revelation of Josh Draper as a gun key defender with serious coolness under pressure
- the return of Nathan O'Driscoll as a damaging wingman
- the resilience of Heath Chapman, after some injury blighted years.
- the consistency and effort of Sam Sturt, who added a new dimension to the forward line
- the excitement of the way use handball chains to scythe through defences and get out the back
- the prospect of a gun recruit in Shai Bolton + other fresh talent.
- the youth of our 3 key forwards

We will learn to close out games and we will get better.

I said it a while back: 2025 will be the year.

Mark my words!

Our coaching box needs a plan B &/or C. So many games this season when our plan A isn’t working and we just stick with it for the entire game.

I don't think that reflects reality. They constantly innovate and react to the game situation.

Tell me the last big change that we have made during a game that has turned the game around for us?

We’re an excuses club.
We ( coach/playing group) accept effort instead of results. “ We had a crack” typified the reaction to losses that should have wins. Apart from some insipid team selection calls in the face of overwhelming numbers to the contrary, Freo has nearly always unlocked opportunity rather than seizing the occasion.
Injuries = excuse
Umpires = excuse
Young group= excuse
The sense I get is that there’s always next year notion from the club. Fyfe hasn’t got that time.

Well they could have reacted to Horne Francis today.

Things we need in 2025:
More speed through the midfield - too many one paced players,
A negating type down back like Starcevich,
A negating mid fielder who can run,
Sturt to stay - he won't,

Too many one paced players - Brayshaw, O'Meara, Serong, Fyfe, Johnson....

If 2024 doesn't spark some mongrel in all our players next year, then I don't know what will.
We need to use our draft capital wisely and come back next year fired up and ready to roll.

When Pearce comes back I’d like to see Draper stay in the side and moved up the ground and given the opportunities Johnson has squandered.
