TOPIC: Sam Sturt

We see glimpses, don't we? And he's getting better.

There was a moment where if Banfield, or Schultz were in the same piece of play you'd get a smother.

But I think Longmuir needs to focus on what he can do, rather what he can't do.

Yes, and that's the same narrative we get on Brodie and Erasmus.

He's kicked 6 goals in 3 games. I feel like if your team's biggest weakness is scoring, and there's a chance your 22nd man picked can kick 2 goals a game, you sort of have to pick them.

That lead-up-the-guts and straight kick from 50 in the first quarter was a thing of beauty. Him running away from other pacy defenders was also telling.

He just doesn't seem to find the ball in the other situations. I'm not sure if that's a role thing, an endurance thing or an instinct thing, but he's got some tools to be a very useful player.

and he's got good hair! there`s only so many people allowed on game day. Is Matt Johnson a ranga? that could explain things too.

Off Sturt and onto Johnson. O'Meara being consistently picked has been discussed, but I really don't understand the automatic inclusion of Johnson before Brodie and Erasmus. Doesn't seem to matter how well they do at Peel or how Johnson does at the top level, he will always be given chances compared to them.

Yup. Sturt doesn’t get a lot of it, but ultimately if he (and the rest of the forward line) only got 2 touches each but also kicked 2 goals each, we’d probably be better off than our current situation.
And I’m with Corp, not sure why Johnson is a walk up start. Sure, he goes ok for a young bloke but his stats are mostly “below average” and he hasn’t torn a game apart at any point. Would prefer he was being rotated through that 22nd spot with other depth players.

See how Waterman is remarkably coming on now. As soon as Kennedy retires. Midfielders look for players. They don't look for Sturt. Hence Longmuir says, "you better do all the defence stuff real good."

Look for him. One on one will beat most in the air.

I haven't seen enough live Freo games with Sturt playing to assess his defensive work properly, but I like his speed, accuracy, and the way he combines with the rest of the forwards.

And I have noticed him doing more when we don't have the ball.

He's played well enough recently to be given an extended go.

I like this assessment, hypen. It may also suggest that he may excel only under certain game conditions, and as we see, this is very dynamic and changes constantly.

Much as I don't like to admit it, though, I do think Waterman had those other attributes Longmuir is asking Sturt for before Kennedy left and they started looking for him.

Some of it I think can develop with experience, some of it may just be not being hard enough, but I'd love to see Sturt get a good go at it. Movement is important in the forward line. Effective and efficient movement. This is where I'd concentrate if I were Sturt.

Sturt looked better the more games he played back to back last season, and we are seeing the same this season.
Maybe Voss could play the role that Sturt is playing right now but maybe that makes us too top heavy in the front half.
Anyway, if Sturt kicks 2 or 3 goals a game and draws a defender away from Amiss then he’s done his job.

I think it would wreck Amiss if he went back to the 2's, the contest is Sturt or Voss, don't know how Kuek fits in up front?

Kuek is a very interesting prospect, his speed and agility look good, even though he is so light that he may get pushed off the ball. Hope to see him back at Peel soon. Could he be a mid sized forward in an AFL side?

If Sturt kicked 2 or 3 goals a game he'd get a podium finish in the Coleman Medal.

Bayley Fritsch is probably the best case for scenario for Sturt. This season Fritsch is averaging 2.1 goals, 9 touches and 1.5 tackles a game.

Sturt in a very small sample, is averaging 2 goals, 8 touches and 1 tackle a game.

I don't think he's a star, but I think more time should be invested in figuring out if he fills a need.
