TOPIC: Neil Erasmus

I ventured to Duck park today to watch the 2nd half of the ressies and the league game Peel vs SD with particular attention paid to a few fringe Dockers like Simpson, Brodie, Tabs, Wagner, Erasmus etc...
Neal Erasmus - wowee - He is a star. I thought as much but watching him on the big Basso Oval today confirmed as much.
I know he has some doubters based on a few efforts as sub etc.
He is an absolute star and we need to get him in the 1s asap.
We cant let him go to another club through lack of opportunity.
He is a beast who thrives on being top dog. He is exceptional overhead, tackles hard, runs hard, in unfazed and has amazing skills.
He just needs the confidence or a leader to give him belief and he will be away. He is a jet - Get him in

It pains me to see how we are managing some of our young talent. Erasmus needs opportunities to develop at the highest level.

The knock seems to be on his ball use, what did you observe ?
I watched Matt Johnson in isolation yesterday, when on the wing, he seemed to defer to others a bit ball shy, but put in at the centre bounce, he appeared to be a totally different player.

Yes Erasmus too good for WAFL and Brodie actually went back to playing his in and under game which had been missing for a bit. The trouble with Erasmus and Brodie they are 2 more that don’t kick goals. DeLean looks like he can.

Erasmus is too big and good at Peel (same for Brodie). However even in that game, was often slow to move the ball on, make decisions and show awareness of what was around him. These are things he needs to learn asap and the best way to do it is in the cauldron of AFL football.

He isn't building those skills and awareness in the WAFL where he's big and strong enough not to worry about opposition players tackling him easily. He needs to spend time in the AFL system failing and learning. He needs to build those instincts as to what to do and when, where he can take an extra step and when he needs to get rid of the ball. When he can size up an option and when he can take on a tackle. He is not getting that at WAFL level.
Nathan: When did you get balls?
Simon: I've always had balls you've just never seen them.
Nathan: That's the gayest thing I've ever heard.

Can we play both Erasmus and Johnson in same team though as they are both at similar stage in their development. Johnson is a bit bigger and often takes on tackles which he is getting better at breaking. I see him as the heir to Nat Fyfe but can we play Erasmus as well maybe as a replacement for O'Meara whose experience down back has been handy in recent weeks but botched 2 easy shots on goals which would have helped on Friday night? The other question is can Erasmus kick goals an issue which all our midfielders are currently lacking in ability?

People have praised JOM in the past few weeks however I have thought his play was ineffective at best. He has barely found the ball while not providing any damaging possessions, effectively going missing for large periods of games. I can't recall any impactful moments and I've been looking out for them. It isn't enough for him to retain his position in the side.

It really seems like a wasted opportunity for Ras to get some game time where JOM has provided nothing meaningful.

Well he has done some good work in defence recently but unfortunately I agree with you Erasmus should be taking his place in the side. What I find interesting about O'Meara is that if, as seems likely based on some of the gossip going round, we pick up Baker in the trade period he would be losing his spot anyway next season so why not in the interim period give Erasmus a shot at making a serious claim for the role.

Icon - His disposal by foot was excellent but as Biz has alluded to - you should expect that at WAFL level when the pressure isnt as high.
I was pleasantly surprised at the depth of kicks kick however - He is a good kick and hopefully a only a matter of time before he shows that at AFL level..
On one piece of play the ball sailed high to a contest in Peels forward 50 with about 5 or 6 players wrestling for it. Raz came flying in from the left side and took a nice clunk at its highest point. It actually reminded me of Leo Barrys mark. It was a quality grab and not something I expected from him.

He'll be right, don't fear. He's a victim of everybody's wildest dreams that Fyfe would still be fighting fit at this stage. He will have a long career as a high quality part of Freo's midfield and, likely, leadership group.

Patience, Grasshopper.

2023 was Flagmantle? Never happened, and so far it looks like 2024 won’t be a top four year either. Could be but I wouldn’t bet on it so far.

Play all the blokes you want to get games into now, this year, the coach has another year to pull it all together.

who said 2023 was flagmantle?

anyway Johnson could be developing to the point where in the back half of the season you can them both in the same team.

then omeara sub. or maybe switta would be good coming on with some zip when the game has slowed in the third.

Flagmantle was a meme, a fun joke and not a serious indication that the club should be winning a premiership in 2023.

A few stats in this article suggest more was possible than what was achieved.
